What are they for - anyone know?

I assume they are for either measuring the traffic volume or the speed of traffic for survey purposes. There seems to be loads appearing in our area of Bedfordshire!

If you mean those little double rubber tracks then I'm pretty certain that you're right - they measure flow of traffic and are used to generally guage how much particular roads are used at particular times etc etc... I may be wrong but perhaps someone in the know will post...


Knowing my luck though, they're prob f'ck all to do with that

I think if its one cable thingy its traffic flow.

Think the double one is for speed as well but not sure. I usually slow for the double one as I dont want them replaced with a cash generator.

errr, I thought the double ones were just measuring the direction the traffic is travelling in - Can't possibly measure speed as different sized wheels would measure different speeds! (bigger wheels would hit the second line quicker!)

Putting your handbrake on as you go over them would reduce their effectiveness permanently. I have seen plod using 2 tubes to nick people for driving safely, if slightly above an arbitrary limit.

Your wrong. They are for measuring speed if there is 2 of them. Or just a count if there is a single.

I dont know what your getting at with wheel size? The front contact point of the tyre is still the front contact point of the tyre a bit further down the road regardles of the size or shape of the tyre...

Slightly less obvious than Brucies suggest would be to find the chained up solar powered box that they are connected to and cut the pipes with a stanley knife...

Me too - I always make sure I'm at the relevant speed going over them. I cross 4 pairs on a 25 mile journey to work at the moment - what are they up to

Well if everyone speeds over them then expect a camera or camera van to appear. Or just possibly something better like an speed sencing sign.

Often see them after a fatal accident has happened so they can see if most people are speeding at the time of day the accident happened etc.

I believe it's actually the ones with 3 strips which measure the speed (similar to the Truvelo actuating cables set up in the tarmac). The two strip or single strip machines are just traffic surveys.

Your measuring axels not vehicles. What about trucks with 6 axels?

All your measuring is the time between the tyre/axel crossing one tube to the same tyre crossing the next. Most wheels are spaced further apart than the tubes on the road. Yes you'll get some anomalies but you can easiy throw those out.

right.

single tubes can only count axles, and then use an algorithm calculation to convert that to the (likely) number of vehicles.

double tube counters can be used for classifying counts (ie cars / light goods / heavy goods / motorbikes etc) or to record speeds (not recorded as absolutes but within "bins" ie 20 to 30, 30 to 40, 40 to 50) and directions of vehicles etc.

These counters are NOT calibrated for prosecution. They have nothing to do with Truvelo or any of those technologies.

the police can use two-tube devices to measure sppeds for prosecution purposes but these are not the same counter boxes.

Be carefull with these buggers,
While the box usually chained to a lamppost is collecting data, They cam bods are using this system more and more.
As far as I am aware you can only be taken from behind (just how those to@:{rs like it"
so carefull.

If these where 'cut' by a passenger opening his door and dragging an sharp stanley blade over them by accident, would it stop them working?

I believe it would. I think they just sence the pressure change in the tube when you go over it. I would expect them to be quite tough though as a lot of traffic go's over them....

Yes it would but why do you want to stop them working?

And anyway if they lose a days data, what do they do? They leave it another day - and another - and another till they have the data they need.

We can't take this lying down, we have to stand up for ourselves and fight, Britain did not get where it was today by sitting around........


sorry my argument is flawed.

Just wondered as they are obviously checking speeds. On my route home these where laid down for several months off and on. Now we have a nice van parked up every few days taking our pictures.
