Anyone know what it is?

I mean the lap record for the old circuit (the 13/14 mile one). Doesn't matter what car.

Had a discussion at work today about this & was slightly ridiculed for saying the record was around 4 1/2 minutes or so (or did I mean 5 1/2?)........was I making this up? I could have sworn some of the sportscars i.e. Porsche 962's etc etc were doing these kind of times?

[small]I hope I wasn't quoting my Project Gotham 2 time!?!![/small]

Wow, they're fast. I didn't think they were anywhere near that low.

Given the advances in materials and aerodynamics since the days of Bellof's 1982 Porsche 956, is anyone able to postulate the likely lap time around the Nordschleife if say an Audi R8 (or even a Aston DBR-9) were fielded.

Calculators out!

Although they have added the odd chicane at Le Mans, the average speeds were higher 20 or so years ago. Using that as a rough guide, the R8 may not be that much quicker, if at all.

From the 2004 Autosport supplement:
1971 Porsche 917 (Helmut Marko & Gijs van Lennep) 3,315.203 miles @ 138.13 mph. (Circuit of 8.37 miles).
2003 Bentley EXP Speed 8 (Guy Smith, Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello) 3,196.282 miles @ 133.18 mph. (Circuit of 8.45 miles).

The first is a lap of 3 mins 28 secs.
The second is a lap of 3 mins 48 secs.

I reckon it's close, but pit-stops probably play a huge part in those figures.

I notice that the 1993 Peugeot 905B (Geof Brabham, Eric Helary, Christophe Bouchut) is given as 2,168,750 miles (less than the Bentley) @ 133.34 mph (more than the Bentley). Both details on the same (length) circuit.

Road car is 7:19 or thereabouts, Was the radical turbo but that was beaten by about a second by the doonkvert (sp?) caterfield type thing with an audi 1.8T engine.

have to say, that Mr Bellof was an absolute hero, and one of my all time great drivers, just an absolute lunatic and I'm pretty sure that lap will continue to stand for a very long time yet, I don't believe anything has come remotely close since?

Wonder what a modern day F1 car would run at the Nordschliefe? 5 mins?

It depends how much the F1 car was modified - they're not designed to run on tracks like the NS. If you're talking "as is" then I can't see it being anywere near 5 mins. I would guess they'd need extensive suspension mods (redesign) to do a blinding lap.

It's the sort of thing that is completely pointless (except maybe for the publicity) but I'd like to see someone try it - just so we'd know.

I guess that means that the average speed is a misprint then.

The Caterham was being driven by Robert NEARN - sometime racing driver and son of the founder of Caterham Cars, Graham Nearn. I think that time was set around 1996.

1999 actually - & he'd never driven the 'Ring before alledgedly.

Also can you call the Radical Turbo a "road car". Does anyone on PH own one which is road legal ?

It was Phil Bennett who did the Radical lap - apparently he was only allowed to do one flying lap, and said he could easily find a few more seconds if he had a few more laps.

So I think the donkevort thingy time wouldn't stand for long if Radical went back. Whether it's a road car... I'd like to drive one on the road just once!
