Watch what you say in forums!

Police monitoring a forum convict boastful motorist

M6 by the Lakes -- scene of the crime
M6 by the Lakes -- scene of the crime
They're watching us -- right here on PistonHeads.

Last December, a man took his girlfriend for a drive on the M6 in Cumbria, hit 88mph, got snapped by a scamera -- then boasted on a Web site about how he had got away without being caught. The driver, Stephen Quas, had apparently persuaded his girlfriend Isabelle Fortot to say that it was her face that had been hidden by the sun visor in the scamera's photo.

But Cumbria police were sneakily monitoring the site, Pepipoo.com, and now Stephen Quas and his girlfriend have to wear electronic tags, as part of their heavy community service sentences "for perverting the course of justice". He got 240 hours’ community service, she got 200 hours.

Others have been caught the same way -- so be careful what you say on a permanent notice board that's both open to the world and very easily searchable.

Speed Camera Partnerships are not interested in raising revenue.

I'm waiting for the knock on the door

I was doing more than 140mph for at least ten kilometers on a public road on my way to work last tuesday. I have a clean conscience and I will do it again and again

Why more and more commentators are using the words such as 'turning into a police state' is very easy to understand IMO.

What says they post.

How stupid can somebody be to lie on a speeding form and then boast about it?

Then again on my last 200 million NIPs....

(only joking. I haven't had any, yet).

It also means you have to be very careful about leaving your PC logged on while you get that coffee. Who knows what your collegues might have you confess to?

me too. and I'm gay.

The point is : The offence was trivial - but lying to the police or courts is not.

We all know people who are prepared to sell points (well I know this bloke that says he knows this bloke, well actually I made it up but hey) to the desperate.

Taking it to the next logical step, does that mean the police will soon be able to charge us with wasting police time if we lie about speeding on a forum?

You can say anything you like, it doesn't mean YOU said it does it.

How do they prove you actually typed it?

Sounds like he confessed to it when taken to court (which is fair game I suppose), but in the circumstances he'd have been better perverting the course of justice to prevent getting done for perverting the course of justice I think

I'd say what I want on a forum, it's not me really

There really is no need for that!

If you can't be civil then don't post!

That 200mph run a few weeks ago was fantastic, shame the cameras didn't take any pics, inferior technology eh?

They don't (except SPECs in roadworks -I hope!!). Lancashire use van's on bridges though. D & G sometimes have a van on the M74 on the straight bit just after the Dumfries junction as you head south. I think Cumbrian might use them on the A74, never seen one their though.

240 hours + 200 hours comunity service while tagged. This has to be a joke. You do not get a sentence this harsh for running down a kid. This just crazy and goes to prove that the justice system and police deserve a little less respect.

Arrest me for this opinion, it is my own and as far as I am aware it is not illegal to question the authorities.

When will they get it, we dont care about speeding (in moderation), we want the vandalism, break ins, muggings, drugs, prostitution to stop.

When a system of cameras was put in place and the minimum "over limit" levels are used to convict in a system that punishes you if you try to defend yourself, people will try to get around it. Thier way of life depends on keeping thier licence. Boasting on a forum is plain stupid but 450hours stupid? I dont think so.

We all know the police read these forums, they have been seen as an asset to us until now. This is a site where big fish stories will be put out. Now the words of advice from the plod on the site will be tinged.

Not fair and I dont think it is just.
