Car thieves convict themselves

If you get flashed by a Gatso, whatever you do, don't turn and grin at the machine.
Three car thieves who stole a Ford Escort in Bournemouth, later found torched, did just that -- and made themselves instantly identifiable.
According to a Daily Mirror story, police couldn't believe their luck when they found the shots in the camera. Local police have already arrested one 16-year-old in connection with the incident. He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Yes, it will serve them right when the quality judicial system gives them a £50 fine, payable in £1 a month and 60 hours community service they don't turn up for.
If we are lucky they will get their non existant licences stamped with 6 points too.

"Now you've been warned, don't do that again, now on ya way lads". These lads aren't that stupid, they know the law, they know they'll get away with it. Yet you or me speed, and we feel the full rath of the law. Justice ???????????? my arse.

Speed cameras ENCOURAGING speeding at and accident "blackspot". Yet another demonstration of why they don't work.
I note the article didn't mention any deaths or injuries, despite the obvious idiot driving.
I agree with the previous posts, these people have different values to us, and have nothing to lose. Licence endorsements/bans have no impact on people who drive without licences in the first place, and who have no regard for the law. They're obviously not ashamed by their behaviour, so you can't stigmatise them. Any financial penalty will be pathetic, as they will probably claim to be on benefits.
Lock them up without TVs, playstations, pool tables, gyms, and make it for a decent length of time.

My wife used to work in a solicitors office, and she often overheard these kind of people boasting about their offences. They would deliberately commit offences to improve their standing amongst equally scummy friends, and also because prison is often nicer than their home life.
Prison is not a deterent.

The point I was making was that they probably don't care. The law has so few teeth that I expect they'll get of with a stern telling off. At worst it'll be a very short stint of rent-free living with meals cooked and plenty of time to watch Sky TV or play on the Playstation.

 If they haven't been convicted yet, isn't the fact that the police have released the image going to compromise the case? After all, despite what we think about these amoebas, they're still "innocent until proven guilty".......???

No mention of the poor sod whose car they nicked and who will undoubtedly lose his no-claim bonus and get a low offer from his insurers for its replacement value. The villains get (if they are very, very unlucky) a gentle tap on the wrist and the admiration of their sub-human mates. Welcome to Blair's wonderful Britain!

I am with you here ubergreg, Give the little s  s a bloody good hiding, or you could break the odd limb as they won't be able to nick cars for a good few months then. If they touched my car, then the police would be there last worry if i got my hands on them. Sod the law, the little S s need to know that they cant just go around nicking or messing with other peoples motors.

Nice idea, but that would be a breach of their human rights, therefore unlawfull.  Another case of criminals having more rights than their victims.

I hope he reported the theft before the snapshot was taken. Otherwise he'd receive the NIP, and would clearly have difficulty saying who was driving. There could also be an element of the offenders assuming that they wouldn't be found, as their details obviously won't be registered against the vehicle. Maybe they were just unlucky that they were recognised.
