Mutherfkrs!
I dont know about down south, but Scotland is getting hit hard.
1. Billboards with a crashed car "speed kills." shite
2. Radio advert where a woman is accused of being "over the limit" only to be revealed that the limit being discussed was the speed limit, not alcohol. This is blatanly trying to put the two in the same bracket.
3. Increased police presence including speed traps and a new undercover car on the M77 (dark blue BMW 5 sieres).
4. www.camerascutcrashes.com advertised.
And to cap it all off, when the above radio propaganda came out some idiot allowed me to do an emergency stop to avoid him. When I eventually overtook him, he had his fkin fog lights on in full day light...AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH, NOT A HAPPY BUNNY.
Speed kills, my arse!

I am not so sure
I think looking at the website - nealy 80% of their cameras are in 30mph zones and there are none in NSL roads from what I can see
also their criteria 8 crashes in 12 months four resulting in seriou injury sets the bar reasonably high - they also say all their cameras are marked red and yellow (high vis)
perhaps before the collective mount up the high horses we might want to consider these guys as an example of how it should be managed ? Just a thought
I do however object to some of the pc hysteria in the text - speeding cars are a magnet for crashes etc
I'd love to hear from any more glaswegian (sp) phers

I'm from Glasgow.
While I appreciate the point about the way the strathclyde program is run I do have a few (major) misgivings.
1. The propaganda. And I refuse to call it anything else cos it IS propaganda. The statistics are intentionally misleading.
Take for example the claim that cameras cut crashes by 60% or whatever it was. Thats ONLY true in the miniscule areas that speed cameras control. The overall crash rate has only gone down by 11%. And this could be because we've not yet had the winter season....
2. The fact that they are clearly trying to make speeding as socially unacceptable as drink driving when the two are clearly in different categories.
It really hacks me off.
And before folk start moaning that I speed everywhere and drive a fast car you should remember that I drive a crappy skoda (when its working
) and I DO observe the limits in urban areas.
It does depress me that a force that did have a reasonably sensible view on speeding is rapidly heading the way of some of the more radical english forces. I had thought that up here we'd be largly unaffected. Looks like I was wrong.
On the flip side remember that the cameras = less traffic cops = less chance of getting nicked doing something daft (like wrecking bollards for example
)

Maybe they haven't got it quite right yet - but it does look like these guys are on the right track.
The infamous (well round here anyway) Stocksbridge bypass has just got the 'congratulations you completed the course in the target time, please collect -£60 and three points', type cameras all the way up it. Now, the road has more than its fair share of publicity as although the accident rate is not that much higher than average (don't know the figures), children do appear in the statistics quite often. It is a big wide (but single carridgeway) road that looks safe to exceed the NSL all the way up it.
I agree with these cameras. They are clearly marked, and anybody paying any attention over recent times will know that breaking for the cameras is not going to help, so everybody drives at the NSL. I only agree with these cameras as the road is a known blackspot, which doesn't advertise its self that way (i.e. it looks safe). Yes, the accidents are probably caused by driver crosing the solid white lines and hitting each other, rather than by driving at 70 mph, but the cameras do say that this is a blackspot, people are dying, please take it easy up the hill, when you're passed we have no objection to you making progress.
Unfortunately, the powers that be will take any sympathy with these well placed cameras to stick them up everywhere else and cash in. Same old story, when local government finally does something right (IMHO), they have to spoil it by going over the top.
