DIY RHD conversion terrifies

The steering wheel's OK but little else

Jeep with DIY RHD conversion
Jeep with DIY RHD conversion
For a mere US$8,000, you could be the owner of a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with a DIY right-hand drive conversion (see eBay link below).

This is no ordinary conversion: it's been done subtly and with forethought, eschewing no expense and with full cognisance of driver requirements.

No it isn't: actually it's one of the scariest things we've ever seen and, if you were driving it, you might feel that any moment could be your last...

The main question has to be: why?

Oh yes, because Postal Workers are right up there with Clarkson, Needell and the Vehicle Inspectorate for credible road testing!

Proof if ever it were needed that North Americans are unaware there is anything either side of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. There are a STACK of RHD jalopies going for pennies in the rest of the civilised world. Do I spot a market for exporting to the US specifically for postal workers who are too obese to get off their fat arses to stick a letter in a can?

The RHD is obviously so Mr. Delivery Guy can alight safely from his veee-hicle curbside.
But honestly, which is the more risky proposition: facing oncoming traffic (as normal) or driving that deathtrap on a daily basis?
I'd take my chances with the traffic.

Note the ever so spacious passenger footwell! Nice.

Oh the Humanity.

Begs the question though, how do you accelerate and brake? The passenger? If you go through a speedcam and get NIP'd, who do you say was driving?

And I thought some of the Lancia Delta RHD conversions were a little on the shady side!

If you look at the photos there's some sort of Heath Robinson contraption connecting the actual pedals to something on the "new" driver's side.

but think of the endless tuning possibilities! you could buy an old muscle car, and using a similiar contraption speed up the steering rack with off-sized pulleys! imagine the handling with 1/4 turn lock to lock!

I am almost at a loss for words !!

What the hell were they thinking ? The thought of someone driving that scares the living daylights out of me, the scope for injury and accident is huge. I'm even more incedulous that a dealer can and would sell such a vehicle and at sucha price too....

All you need is a blow up johny "two jags" preston. sit him in the "driving seat" and then go thru as many speed camara,s as you can, flat out, Then when the ticket comes thru name him as the driver. lets see how he likes it!

How is that allowed on the road? There must be some sort of SVA type test in America.

Would that get through an SVA test? I hope it wouldn't but don’t know enough about the test to think of a specific thing it would fail on.

I think I'm right in saying that they don't even have an MOT type test over there. Emissions are tested but that's all.

you obviously havent seen pimp my ride then! the abominations that are allowed on the roads in the US are pretty dire, as no they dont even have a real MOT, let alone SVA, .Except in Cali, where imports are severley regulated, especially on emmisions, but the governor owns a couple of hummers , but has a prius too so its ok!
