I was driving through South Wales earlier in the week, along a lovely twisty single carriageway NSL road that I know well enough to have fun on in daylight but not so well that I can predict every corner in the dark.

It was late at night and fairly wet, but no major cause for concern.

Problem was that I caught up with some numpty travelling at about 35mph who clearly didn't know the road at all (was braking fairly randomly and was obviously caught out by some of the corners) and was held up for bl00dy ages.

Why didn't I overtake? Because I couldn't see the road ahead and Mr Numpty refused to use full beam!

As I said earlier, I don't know the road well enough to judge where the few straights are in the dark (by the time its obvious they're about to run out!) so my journey home took a lot longer than it needed to.

Are there any rules regarding forcing the car in front to use full beam?

Yep, I know that situation all too well and there's absolutely bugger all you can do about it. I just don't understand why so few people seem to be able to use main beam lights in the dark, it's very frustrating to follow.

None whatsoever except a requirement to have good, correctly aligned, working headlamps. As I remember it the only requirement is to use dipped beam if the lighting conditions require it. Only driving on sidelights is an offence since if it is dark enough to require lighting you must switch the headlamps on, the only time just sidelights is acceptable is for parking.

From previous experience I know how quickly some cars can collect dirt on the headlamp lens turning them from a shining beacon to a weak candle.

Then there are the cars that come with totally sh$£e headlamps to start with.

Most likely though it was a "townie" who doesn't know what full beams are and probably couldn't see past the windscreen regardless of what the headlights are doing...

Nice quote on your profile, Bonce - definately a standout passage from the book (read it just before Christmas.)

Thanks. As you say, the quote stands out as an astoundingly balanced way of thinking from my favourite author and something I agree with 110%.

It also struck me as particularly relevant with the recent discussion about the MadcopGate affair so I felt I had to share it.

This is where you need your portable blue flashing light, pull them over then drive away.

Simple and makes any dodgy overtaking redundant.

and rear fog lamp to make it even harder to see! (is it a new thing in the highway code that you have to use the rear fog lamp apart from on bright summer days? if not, and someone is using their rear fog lamp can i main beam them until they get the hint?)

My number one pet hate.
If its just one car - put yours on!
If its a couple then your stuck i'm afraid.
