Just shopped a drink driver and watched him get Nicked

Yep! I would do it again.

Situation is this:

Im in a small hardware type store in town centre and another customer comes in and is stinking of alcohol and slurs his words when talking to one of the staff pays for his goods and leaves.
"God I hope he is not driving" I comment to the staff member, 2He was when he came in earlier" they reply. Pay for my bits and leave.

Cross over road to my car and there he is getting into a vehicle

Do I shop him or dont I runs through my mind, he pulls away at the same time as me, weaves up the road and turns left - goes over the pavement as he turns.

Thats it I'm shopping him, call the police on my mobile just as he parks up, he stays sitting in his vehicle, I pass all relevant info on to the police and park up.

Twenty minutes pass and they havent turned up and he drives off again and doesn't stop at the give way i call the police again and tell them, operator asks me if I am in a position to follow vehicle until she can get a Police Car to the area.

Follow him half way round the town giving a running commentary on the phone and he drives down a shopping street and parks up again and goes into another shop as I am relaying this to the operator battery on phone goes flat no charger!!

2 mins later Police car drives down street and I flag him down - "thats the vehicle there and thats him in the blue coat walking back to it".

He gets back in and drives off again Police car follows and pulls him, breath test and nicked.

Now my question is would you do what I did or am I a nasty git who is prepared to go out of their way to get someone nicked?

Good effort, particularly as he was ignoring road signs and such like. Did arresting plod have anything to say to you, or are you expecting any feedback from them?

I would have done exactly the same as you. Who knows what might have happened if you hadn't stepped in.

Not everybody is public spirited enough to go to the effort necessary to put a stop to a dangerous situation like that. Good for you.

Give it to charity. Publicly. How about the ABD? If you feel that's inappropriate then ROSPA or the IAM perhaps. One in the eye for the anti-car idiots....

Model citizen for saving the potential tragedy that this normally leads to . . .

I'm aware the money side could be an initiative - but how many of us have had to wrestle keys (or wrestle people!) from your mates?

They may even bring in a reward for shopping people in possession of guns - but the low-lifes would probably get in first - shop their mates and spend the money on crack!

They have got my phone number - If they want a Statement I will give them one. Police man I spoke to said thanks and gave me a thumbs up as he put him in the back of the car.

Well done dude.

I had a simiar incident, bloke down the pub (didnt know him from Adam, which is funny because....oh never mind) pissed out of his head, and I am not joking.

Well, my mate distracted him and I nicked his keys from the ignition.

He thank me the next day.

Well done. Back in 94 New Years morn(02:00 I was shotgun in my friends Renegade when this car went flying by us on the wrong side of the road swinging across all the lanes. Thinking the driver was having problems we sped up to try and get along side him. Being New Years morn the streets were busy with party goers and he very, very nearly took a few people out.

When we pull up next to him we see the guy is so far gone it was sickening. The wheel was covered in vomit. His eyes are barely open and he couldn't talk he was so drunk. After realising shouting was doing nothing we saw a parked truck ahead and bumped his car from the side to pin him up to the high curb so he had no option but to stop or go into the truck as the curb was too high to mount. I called the BiB with a very quick descrption of where/what was going on and typically the battery dies(always when you need it most). Thankfully the guy manages to slow enough to just bump into the truck but he just fell asleep when the car stopped. Hailed local squad car going the other way and let them do their thing. they couldn't get a word out of him and I just stood there amazed that someone could be so selfish as to drive in that state and risk everything.

Whilst being a little drunk I can see someone thinking things might be okay(still don't condone it)but this guy looked like he ordered every drink in the bar.
