SOTW: VW Golf VR6
Volkswagen Golf 2.8 VR6, L reg
When it comes to cars, everyone wants a bargain. And with cars getting more reliable, more durable and more rot-free than ever they have been, paying pocket money for an older machine need not be a total restoration job.
In other words, old cars have never been such a good buy -- you get a lot of car for your money, and £1,000 is still throwaway money when it comes to cars.
So in the spirit of aiming for fun, low-cost motoring, here's our regular weekly slot following a trawl of Auto Trader's depths to find a drive-away bargain.
Volkswagen Golf 2.8 VR6, L reg. Three-door, dropped on its bum with 16 inch OZ racing alloys, stainless Janspeed exhaust, Viper induction kit, PAS, CL, FFSR, EM, EW, alarmed, computer, CD player, awesome 150 mph performance, sounds evil, 12 mths MOT & 3 mths tax, bargain. £1,000. no offers.

When I see these add-ons, I automatically assume that the thing's been thrashed by some boy racer! Kind of puts me off what could be a nice car!
And the fact there's no mileage so you'd have to assume it's been thrashed for the last 150,000 miles.
I'm in the marketing for a shed to keep the miles off my Z, this certainly isn't the one for me.
So what if the car has been caned - the engines are nigh on bullet proof - my GTI 16v took a year of constant abuse - two VMax's, countless early morning PH Blats, and bar the usual consumables and worn out bits, she is still chugging along nicely in the hands of my mate.
AT this price chaps, its a 2.8 VR6 engine in a comfortable car, mods or no mods.
If I were strapped for cash and wanted something fun, I'd be interested.
Stop being such doommongers!

Those VR6 engines are far from bullet proof, I'm afraid, although it is the 2.9 version in the Corrado that is more marginal on its cooling/head gaskets due to the overbore leaving precious little metal!
I saw a mint one the other day for £2k, but this one might be tempting for some track day larks?!

I agree the 8V and 16V Gtis had very tough engines. Not so the VR6.
I remember when they were new, I desperately wanted one. i also remember "CAR" magazine ran one as a long term test car and voted it "Lemon of the Year".
This one has been messed around with too much for my liking. There are some subtle mods you can make that improve the car; suspension kit etc.

I Drive a 2.9 VR6 Corrado, and have found the engine to be totally bullet proof - had it for 7 years and it has never ever gone wrong (Although I don't thrash mine). The 2.8 is normally even more reliable though, as the ever so slightly smaller cylinders on the Golf VR are not as close together as on the Corrado VR, resulting in stronger Cylinders and less chance of cracks occuring from heat etc.
The fact that he's advertising the fact that you can get a VR engine up to 150 mph (which isn't a lie) does suggest he's given the car a hard time though! Never mind the engine what about the brakes, suspsenion, etc etc!

It's only got an exhaust, induction kit and lowered suspension. It's not like it's a Corsa with Lambo doors or something! Looks like cracking value although it does need the mileage putting up. VR's can burn a bit of oil when they get on as cylinders 1 and 6 get a bit hot and you get blow by with the bores ovalising. Nothing a slightly heavier weight of oil wouldn't cure ;-)

I had one when it was new. Lemon was about right, it was dreadful. Chopped it in 10 years ago for a Clio Williams which I've still got

I'd avoid the MkIII like the plague - VW took a wrong turn with it
Sorry, i beg to differ!
MK III VR6 Golf is an excellent motor,Had one for nearly 4 years so far, great on the annual Le Mans thrash and euro trips, with no mech probs at all.
Has no bother keeping up with the odd 'two miles a minute +' convoys on a euro trip, but 150.....not quite sure on that!
As mentioned on PH VAG Forum threads, 150,000 easy miles on a well serviced VR6 is not unheard of , but as said before, it does look like this motor would have had a hard life ,,,,,still quite 'cheap speed'though..
