Cayenne driver jailed for 7 years

Three killed after Celica and Cayenne race down 'mad mile'

The drivers of a Porsche Cayenne and Toyota Celica who raced each other along the A217 were jailed for 7 years yesterday after the Cayenne crashed into a Proton while travelling at 80mph. The Proton was carrying four pensioners returning home from bingo and all but one died in the impact.

According to reports, the race started when 31-year-old Richard Cherry accelerated past the Cayenne, driven by 42-year-old Adrian Kuti, at traffic lights. The Porsche gave chase and the cars were undertaking and overtaking traffic while tailgating each other at speeds of up to 100mph in a 40mph zone. The two drivers did not know each other and were both driving home at the time.

Both drivers were held equally responsible by judge Neil Stewart and both were found guilty of three counts of dangerous driving before each being handed seven-year jail sentences after the week-long trial. They were also banned from driving for six years when released.

Cayenne driver Kuti had been in jail before, when he received a five-year sentence for a road rage attack.

The question begs how was a 200bhp Celica giving one of Porches finest turds a run for it's money? Must have been the VW engine one..?

Still, an unfortunate reminder as to why racing should be left to the track.

Idiots. Odd that the bloke who had previously been jailed for a road rage incident didn't get a longer sentence as a result, though.

Surely a repeat offense of that kind of behaviour should give a lifetime ban?

Good. Its about time we had sentencing that reflected idiotic driving like this.

What exactly did these two gain from all of this?:

7 years inside and a guilty conscience for life....

If the celica had hit the proton same result? Doubt it.
Personal transport over 2T is madness and a threat to us all, especially lighter and good handling cars.

The Porker driver had done bird for 5 years for road rage before, this time 3 x D/Driving, killing someone, and only get 7 years.

I think the sentence was lean. Anyone know if this was the Max the mag's could give for this one, otherwise he got off lightly, and will be out in 2.5years on parole...

It's good to see them given a half decent jail sentence. It makes me angry when your hear of drivers who've caused death receiving only a couple of points and a slap on the wrist.

that needs to be qualified with a " death by dangerous driving!. you can't jail people who are involved in genuine accidents which, unfortunately, end up being fatal.

My parents live in Kingswood which is just up the road from "The Mad Mile" I have seen some very bad driving on this stretch.

The car garage Romans which you may of heard of is also just up the road.

I'm sure there is more to this story.

Partly the fault of the designers of the A217 that it is so often the scene of the traffic light GP.

It is a DC, but the RH lane splits into two at each set of lights. So from green light you are fighting the car next to you for space into the single lane ahead. Absolutely guaranteed to create aggro.

I do it twice a day, and am virtually certain to get someone refusing to merge in, so you get three abrest in two lanes sometimes. Even if you want to slow down to let them in, you usually have someone up your chuff who will get annoyed at this.

What a low-life, he obviously learnt nothing the first time he was in jail - even though it was for 5 years. He then went back and caused more trouble on the roads. No respect at all. Let's hope he stays in jail.

No. Driving like a tt is the threat, and you can do that in any car.

Seems like the Cayenne driver got off lightly having already had a penalty for a similar offence.

I hope he gets passed around the prison like a peace pipe.

It does seem very odd and somewhat unfair on the Toyota driver. He was obviously driving like a complete idiot, but HE didn't kill or hit anyone or have a previous sentence, yet he gets the same 7 year jail sentence as the Porsche driver.
