An interesting article in the Evening standard with a preview of the new conservative road policy. Highlights include higher night time motorway limits (good), reduced limits by schools etc (good), removal of uselessinapropriate speed calming measures (good), removal of revenue generating scameras (good)

Obviously this is all motivated by winning votes but i think Labour really have become a car hating party, so it has to be a good thing that the tories use it against them if only to get them to wake up to the public opinion a little more ?

if they make it 90 mph, they might even get a check in the box.

Coupled with the council who want to remove all speedbumps I think the tide might just be turning!

Now, out with the half tyres and diesel just to make sure our depth of feeling is understood...

80 seems ok to me, I think on the abd.org.uk they say the 85% percentile speed on M-ways is 85. So I assume they would not be able to prosecute below 90, so most drivers would no longer effected. Would also be happy to see, as in France, a lower in bad wheather say 70.

The big one though is a complete review of all limit reductions in the last 10 years by an independent body who would only allow that if justified by road safety concerns.

Doubt they'd do much. Can you imagine the hitting the fan if they raised a limit and there was ever a crash on that road again?

An 80mph limit. Nice idea in theory but anyone who has ever tried to move along the M4 towards London past J4 will know that is a laugh. Oh - unless you are one of the 23 buses or taxis per day that makes use of your own special lane.

I reckon there should be a minimum speed on motorways....

Or...why not just ban cars that are particuarly pikey or cannot do 0-60 in a set number of seconds....?

Yes - the M4 - used to be a great road and yet we manage to get caught in gridlock Sunday night at 10pm....great to see the taxi / bus lane well used (1 out of service bus and 1 taxi)!!!!

There is, IIRC, it's 50mph

Historically, I think the tories have been less controlling / nannying than Labour.

This concerns me greatly as Tory Central Office get most things wrong these days and their attempts to win votes generally loose them.

Could it be that in fact the majority of UKs voters are either happy with 70 mph or, horror of horrors, would prefer a reduction.

I think a rationalisation by introduction of a Europewide 120kph limit is a more likely scenario.

I worry each time a politician pontificates about motoring matters.

Absolutely. I wouldn't be surprised if they honestly actually wanted to do this, but then found that the backlash was such that it wouldn't happen. I'll bet anyone that they haven't thought this one through yet. I am surprised though (and depressed) that they haven't had the intelligence to make more pro-car noises like this before; would have thought cars/independence/financial independence as expounded by the Tories were natural bedfellows.

Hmm .. it's a difficult one this.
An 80mph limit sounds like a step in the right direction (IMO).
It could, however, turn out to be more strictly enforced so that the position really isn't any different from the 70mph limit we have now.
Just a thought, as I'm sure there'd be a catch somewhere.
