World Record At PH Show

Terry Grant completes record j-turn

Stunt driver Terry Grant has set a new Guinness World Record in a Renault Twingo.

During a performance at the Autosport Show, which ran alongside the PH Show, Grant spun the small French hatchback through a gap 18 centimetres more than the length of the car.

In front of a sell-out crowd at the Live Action Arena at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre Grant reversed the Twingo and spin it through barriers that were just 378 centimetres apart.

The crucial measurement for Grant was the diagonal size of the Twingo.

At 370 centimetres, this left Terry with just four centimetres gap between the barriers.

Terry said: ‘For this record, the car needs great agility, visibility and pinpoint accuracy.

‘The Twingo has it in spades!   Best of all, despite up to six shows each day and numerous practice runs, it was bomb-proof! You couldn't drive many cars home after that sort of punishment.’

The previous World Record for a J-turn was set on 9 April 1999 in Munich Germany when Russ Swift spun a car though a gap 172 centimetres longer than the length of the car.

A J-turn is defined by Guinness World Records as turning a car through 180º from reversing in a straight line to driving forwards in a straight line.

This thread is worthless without pictures / video!

(Edit: I obviously posted the comment before the pics were uploaded. A vid would be nice though)

I've seen people who would have trouble driving through a gap like that, let along spinning a car through it.

Does anyone know during which show this was achieved? I was there for the 3.30 on Saturday and apparently there was a new record set then, but he maybe beat it again.

He kept trying.

I was at the 3:30 on sunday... forget the extra length - i think it was 50cm longer than the car.. as he'd knocked 1m off the record by then.
That was the last show he was performing (they said - the 6pm show was an oval racing special) but Terry was going to continue to try and lower it in the mean time.

The Twingo looks pretty good to me and i believe he has just given them plenty of much needed good publicity.

Did they actually measure it though, or just put on the big screens "new world record"? I was chatting to a guy at the Yorkshire PH meet on Monday who was in a different show to me and they claimed the same in both shows that it was a new world record. Also the fact that the barriers were just put in place with no kind of checks suggested the claims weren't up to Norris McWerters levels.

The Ladies record still remains untouched though, at 4.8 meters.

Isn't Terry Grant a mate of the Hamilton's...? (as in Lewis, Anthony et al, not Neil and Christine)

I can't even DO a J-turn but would have liked to see it from end-on to get an idea of just how little room there was. Brilliant parking trick! bow
