No-ssan GT-R

New GT-R says no, no, no to mods

More kit than KITT
More kit than KITT
Michael Knight used to have trouble getting the upper hand with his smarty pants car but the new Nissan GT-R is starting to make KITT look like a bit of a walkover.

Reports have emerged revealing a number of new bits of tech that make sure the big Nissan will be an extremely tough nut to crack for anyone wanting to tinker with it.

Aftermarket alloys look like they are out, confirming rumours circulating the Tokyo motor show.

A sensor is understood to be mounted on the valve stem and if the car is fitted with new rims an error code appears on the dash.

The new GT-R won’t allow custom exhausts either as any modification to the intake system causes the ECU to go haywire.

We reported a few weeks back that the car will remove its speed limiter when the car arrives at a track.

Well, not only will the track have to be a Nissan approved track, not any old circuit, but owners are required to head over to a Nissan High Performance Centre for a £500 safety check afterwards.

If this is not done the car will make sure the warranty is void.

There is no word yet whether PistonHeads stickers will affect the ECU but we will keep you up to date…

IMO that would put me off buying one. If I've spent big ££££ on buying a car I'll do what I want with it thanks (despite the fact that I'd probably never modify it anywayw!!)

I think people underestimate how industrious the modders can be. There are already aftermarket PCMs available.

I wouldnt care not big into modifying anyway. Would just enjoy the standard car although with that many systems on board it does sound like its got some serious potential to go wrong.

ETA: Bloody hell just read about the safety check nonsense, are they trying to lose customers?

Anything man can create he can crack, mods will arrive just more slowly and at increased cost.

The first tuning company to start offer serious mods without ecu error codes will make a lot of cash.

A sensor mounted on the valve stem ?? I am guessing the monkeys at Kwik Fit are going to struggle with that...

Cheers,

There is always a way round it. They said the I phone was un crackable but look at it now!

I think its a shame Nissan have taken this stance though - I though japanese manufacturers went hand in hand with the affiliated tuners? Nismo for example.

Worst title ever btw...

Mines already have a speed delimiter, it won't be long before they have an ecu.

The new GT-R uses the exhaust as part of the intake system? This new fangled technology really is something special.

So aftter 25 laps of caning the car round the 'ring (assuming that it's approved) you need to take the car to a service centre?? Wonder where the nearest one would be? Come to that how the hell can they enforce that?

Mines have already developed a replacement ECU I believe. And exhaust. And brakes. And suspension. I don't think Nissans anti-mod policy is going to be upheld somehow!

What a bunch of knob-ends.

Surely the UK version won't have all this nonsense? Nissan-approved tracks, that is - Im sure they will still have the "dont change your wheels" stuff.

Knob-ends.

This car is rapidly going from bargain 911 turbo-hunter to, well lets face it, a bit of a joke really.

I can only imagine that Nissan got stung by a lot of people modding the 32,33,34's and then taking it back to Nissan to have it repaired under warranty (after the offending mod had been removed)?

why are the company trying so hard to stop people tinkering with the car, if you buy one the car becomes yours surely?? its your right to do as you wish with the car, be that tuning, painting it a different colour, etc!

Is it April 1st already?

As one of many people with a GTR on order and in regular communication with Nissan, I'd love to know where this information is 'emerging' from?

Is this official Nissan statements or just hearsay; Daily Mail style?

One significant dealership is receiving two UK spec cars in a few weeks from Nissan; specifically so they can begin training and begin developing aftermarket 'performance' options.

My BMW M5 has tyre pressure monitoring, so guess what happens if I change the wheels? I would get an error message on the dashboard... until a dealer disabled that element of the computer for me.

And as for the Nissan approved track bollox... rofl

I can only conclude that a) it is April 1st, or b) PistonHeads have been acquired by Murdoch?

wink

ETA: in the 'old' days PH would usually clarify all news reports regarding cars by seeking comment and/or confirmation from manufacturers? It's called journalism...
