Shamlessly clipped from the ABD e-mail list, because I know a lot of you (particularly bikers) enjoy the rural roads around Oxfordshire - but as it says they are re-intrroducing the "Red Flag" around there now! Rich...

Oxford County Council published no less than 15 speed limit orders in the
Oxford Times on Friday, 8th August. They seem intent on bringing back the
red flag in Oxfordshire.

A361 County Boundary to Williamscot Hill
B4015 Clifton Hampden to Chiselhampton
A4095 Kirtlington to Bunkers Hill
A425 Kingston Bagpuize to Standlake
A44 Chipping Norton to County Boundary
B4012 Thame to A40 at Postcombe
B4017 Cumnor - Farmoor to Henwood
B4030 Enstone to Middleton Stoney
B4035 Banbury to County Boundary
B4507 Wantage to Ashbury
B480/B481 Oxford City to Cookley
A4421 Finmere to Bicester
A422 Drayton to Wroxton
B4044 Eynsham to Cumnor

All of the above are to impose a 50mph limit to replace the current NSL.

In addition, there is a notice for A329 - Stadhampton to Great Milton and is
listed as "to replace the existing speed limit of 50 miles per in order the
administration of Traffic Regulation Orders on the section(s) of road
listed", whatever that means.

Objections are to be made in writing by 1st Sept. Copies of the Order,
statement of the Council's reasoning and map for the above orders can be
obtained from a Mr Gabriel Stocks on 01865-815076.

Are there any reasons why in the article?

Surely as they are in the middle of nowhere and have no built up population etc they "SHOULD" be NSL?

Time to move...

I will but I can gaurantee it will do nothing - these people are tunnel visioned morons who ignore the public on every issue.

The county is slowly disappearing under a deluge of ridiculous speed limits, pelican crossings and speed humps.

Every road has "suggested" speeds posted before corners that even my cat could judge safely and areas that were once useful for overtaking the rural/farm traffic of the county have now been double white lined - oh except where its too dangerous in my opinion to overtake.

I'm going to phone now to request details of this ridiculous plan.

I'm in Henley (South Oxfordshire) where there's been growing concern over the 30mph limit that stretches for 3 miles South of the town until beyond Shiplake.

This is a country A road with a few junctions - nothing too serious, but every time you go along it there is always some Volvo/Micra doing 28.9mph for the entire 3 miles Traffic builds up behind until someone decides to overtake.

The limit is simply TOO SLOW for the road & conditions and is frustrating drivers into breaking the law.

The road is now MORE DANGEROUS than before, as the amount of overtaking has increased ten-fold.

Since the limit has been introduced, my belief is the number of accidents has INCREASED. Would love to see the statistics.

There go some of my favourite roads. THe stretch from Thame to Postcombe is a particular pleasure, and much used by bikers who stop off at a bike friendly pub in Postcombe for an orange juice and a chinwag. I despair.

I shall write and question exactly what difference it will make lowering the speed limit from 60 to 50!

Oh, silly me - allows them to place cameras and make $$$$

The problem is, that when these councellors drive these roads in their 92 Rover 214s, the new limits probably feel extremely dangerous to them.

Some of my favourite roads there - have also let some mates know.

Seen the ABD notices on some of the national speed limit signs too!

I'll use some ink now!

Yep, one of the roads that makes my commute to work bearable. Just phoned Mr Stocks who answered the phone "Road Safety".

Will be very interesting to see what information he sends me.
