Alastair Darling has reigned in the government's swingeing fuel tax increase planned for today's budget - but the pain will be staged instead.

Darling's budget adds a penny now, the rest comes later
We had expected an extra 3p per litre to be added to pump prices today, but the government has decided to add a penny now, another penny in October, and another after Christmas.
Darling also confirmed Labour intends to restart the Fuel Tax Escalator from 2014.
Other budget news includes the announcement of £100m for local authorities to repair potholes, but no clue as to how the government intends to make sure the money is spent on the roads as intended, and £285million for motorway 'improvements' that include more hard shoulder running schemes. (They're the ones that come with Highways Agency speed enforcement cameras attached.)
It has also been confirmed that the Dartford River crossing on the M25 is definitely up for sale, leading to fears that toll charges could rise under new ownership.

Yikes, paid £1.27 a litre for super yesterday, so at least £1.30 by end of year, notwithstanding what the oil companies and retailers do! Definitely helps to have a city car, aswel as something special for the weekend.
As for fixing potholes, that's not nearly enough, wouldn't begin to cover Scotlands roads never mind anywhere else!

Exactly. Why people invest so much time and energy deliberating over which party forms the next government is beyond me.They both believe in the same basic principles and have shown themselves capable of both 'good' and 'bad' policy decisions. Generally they seem to be victims of circumstance and are happy to either take the credit or blame factors beyond their control.
Some governments will have benefited a particular individual, others will have hindered their aspirations. Over the course of a typical lifetime, I'd imagine it all evens out.
They each have their supporters who benefit from the policies of that government. There are others who find they are disadvantaged as a result of those same policies. Eventually, the group who perceive themselves to be worse off becomes a majority and we switch party. The cycle then begins again - the government starts their term on a wave of voter enthusiasm and goodwill. This degenerates into apathy and eventually resentment. All change again.

k idea charging a toll on the busiest bit of the busiest motorway in the land.
The Fuel Tax was coming.....lets not all be naive we all knew last year that Opec was "content" with Crude being $80 a barrel.....they said so...... we all knew that Shell etc. were banding about their preferred and fair price of £1.20 Litre...... why are we all surprised.....
But wait until it gets to £1.20.... watch the sudden "price war"....it will be phoney as they always are but there will be one..... My prediction is after the Easter break....and ASDA will kick it off
Lets face it....at Christmas here it was £1.06 litre........ now it is £1.18 litre so they can afford to cut 6p in a price war..... and yes I am a cynic

Well the first thing I would do is get all the benefit money grabbing work shu lazy wakners in the country and make them work and pay tax. PS Tories would do the same.
Get all the illgal's who are not willing to work and pay back into this country,put them directly on a ship back to the country they have come from and screw there human rights because as far as i'm concerned mine are being disregarded.
I work 6 days a week, i do not claim 1 benefit, I pay all taxs and barly just manage to scrap by each month.. and every day I see the apparent disabled benefit takers sitting in the park drinking strong brew and taking drugs that my money pays for...
This country needs a drastic reform and people need kicking into touch and a major reality check on what living and giving fairly is all about.
But is there really anything anyone can do? No... simple answer...
