Mercedes Makes 'World's Fastest 3D Film'

The Isle of Man, David Coulthard and a Mercedes SLS AMG - sounds like movie magic to us...

You probably don't need much of an excuse to pop down to the pub of a weekend but this - the prospective showing of the 'world's fastest 3D car movie' - is a cracking reason to pop down to the Dog and Duck for a swift half.

The film was shot on the Isle of Man, where they closed the Mountain Road - part of the iconic TT road circuit - to allow ex-F1 driver and TV pundit David Coulthard to put a Mercedes SLS AMG properly through its paces, and top out at 162mph along the way.

So what tracking car do you use to sit six feet in front of an SLS AMG at speeds of more than 140mph? Why another SLS AMG, of course - piloted this time by rally ace Robbie Head.

Add to that specialist boom cars and helicopters and we reckon it's fairly safe to deduce that this is not a low-budget effort.

Have a little gander at this trailer and fascinating 'making of' documentary in good ol' 2D for a little more info.

If you can't make it to a 3D-ready boozer on Sunday - when the film will be shown on Sky's 3D pub channel - then don't worry, because the film will also be showing in Mercedes dealers in the autumn. Although the guest ales in Merc dealers are always rubbish...

Whilst I personally see little point 3D on its 30 year revival fad, I want to know who in their right minds would pay £2000 for a 3D tele, and from what I have read the glasses are £100 each, unless you steal a st load from a cinema, will be interesting to see how many people get suckered into buying the 3D stuff.

I can honestly see myself going to the Mercedes dealer in the autumn aswell
"Hello there, anything take your fancy, or can I help in anyway?"
"Not really, just here to watch the tele"

ETA: Should this not also be in TV, Film and Radio?

Great concept and footage. Shame the car is a bit of an Ugly dog. It's like the Merc/AMG stylists gave up at the A-post going rearwards...

Proportions of the car are not very complementary - especially given all the angles covered on that film. All IMHO of course.

They should have used the Stig.

Can't use 3d classes. Makes me feel sick after a few seconds. All I see is a blur of Blue & Red.

Not sure what 3D is going to do to a movie as boring as DC made it. TopGear has far better sequences......,

Thought the engine noise was a bit lacking. Sounds alright especially on the over-run but doesn't really sing. Maybe it's just me? ears

Look at the rear three quarter and tell me it is a fine, resolved looking design?

I don't know if you have, so I'll hold fire for now, but I've seen one at Mercedes Ipswich - and its absolutely stunning. I never liked the look of the from the rear 3/4 in photos, but it looks so different in the flesh.

The ones in cinemas are different to those used on a home system. It does beg the question of how the pubs are going to handle it though (perhaps the Sky 3D pub package is similar to the cinema arrangement) scratchchin

One thing the article didn't mention is the time it will be shown this Sunday...

Yep! Also in the second "Making Of" video he nearly wanged it into another wall coming out of the hairpin! I wouldn't mind betting they'll put an 18 certificate on this movie due to the likelihood of Coulthard's chin in 3-D scaring small children rolleyes

This might of been mentioned before about the SLS - but in the flesh, this is the most disappointing car I've ever seen. Looks amazing in photos. Real life looks like a big MX5 - there's one been parked outside the Dorchester for 2 weeks. I suspect the owner has abandoned it after the emperor's new clothes spin wore off wink

They must of spent all the budget on the editing, to get the angles that this car actually looks good from.
