SOTW: Toyota Crown

Shed finds living proof that the Japanese do have a history of luxury cars

Compared with that of the European automotive industry, the history of the Japanese luxury car is pretty short. Mercedes-Benz might be celebrating 125 years of glorious existence, and Rolls-Royce is still batting well past its century, but the Japanese didn't really get into their luxury stride until the 1980s when Toyota, Honda and Nissan created Lexus, Acura and Infiniti respectively.

The Japanese luxury car, in short, has very little in the way of heritage behind it. And that's always been a problem for the emergent far-eastern luxury brands, because it's history, provenance and breeding that has traditionally sold luxury cars. Which is something, say the Europeans, that these Japanese Johnny-come-latelys don't have.

At least that's what Merc and Rolls et al would like you to believe, but actually it's a bit of a line, because the Japanese do have a luxury car heritage and Shed has selected proof of its existence for today's Shed of the Week.

It might look like an early 80s American cop car (not necessarily a bad thing) crossed with, well, a Datsun Bluebird saloon (not really a good thing), but this is actually a Toyota Crown - part of a model lineage that stretches all the way back to 1955.

The Crown initially appeared as a taxi, but became larger and more luxurious throughout the course of its various incarnations until it was considered to be a pukka full-size luxury saloon.

By the time the Toyota Crown had reached the iteration you see here - the sixth generation - its luxury car status was fully established.

Beneath the bonnet of this particular car lurks a perfectly respectable 2.8-litre straight six (a version of the 5M-GE motor that is most familiar from the Celica Supra Mk2), that, back in 1981, would have but out a reasonable if not electrifying 145bhp.

The car's luxury credentials are further cemented by such impressively unusual creature comforts as rear-seat air-con controls, separate rear-seat radio controls, an auto-reverse cassette player, central locking and even a remote boot opener.

Pretty impressive, we're sure you'll agree, although some of the other items the vendor lists as proof of luxury are perhaps a little more dubious - Velour seats? We'd prefer leather, ta. And document pouches in the back of the front seats? Everybody say 'ooohhhh'...

Nevertheless, this wafty Toyota looks like it could be a little gem. It's allegedly undergone a fairly recent restoration and there are bills, MOT certificates and main dealer stamps stacked up all the way back to day one. It doesn't say whether it has a current tax and ticket, but we like it sufficiently that we'll choose to believe it has.

And even if it hasn't, with a price tag of £595, you could certainly tax it - and probably put it through its MOT - and stay well within Shed's £1k budget.

£595 for a slice of Japanese luxury car history? Sounds like a bargain to us...

what a great shed - i remember as a kid a bloke who used to own a body repair shop near us had one lurking under the filler dust for years, one day he put a battery on it and it started first time with a bit of fuel and became his daily shed - and that was in the '80s

it was a great car to be in - my father had a chrysler 180 which i thought was the dogs until i went in this.

I think it was a previous generation to this one though....

When I was a kid in the 1970s an old giffer neighbour ran a real old Jap barge, similar to this. Unfortunately, this memory is somewhat overshadowed by the fact that my sister witnessed the self same old gentleman making love to a blow up doll in his lounge at 3:00 in the afternoon...

Blow up dolls need love too!

As do old hideous wobbly Japanese barges. Great shed. And please don't knock velour upholstery, snobbery aside it's much nicer on a cold morning than dead cow!

Nice to see an alternative to the usual German barges we normally have but still not sure if I like it. You have to be very imaginative to make this look good me thinks.

These are the staple (older) taxis in Singapore, and seem pretty much bulletproof. Was chatting to a driver who had done c.300,000km in his (not bad in such a small country) and he wasn't looking forward to having to change it for a newer car.

These things are damn near ubiquitous in Hong Kong, running on LPG as taxis. private car ownership in Hong Kong is horrifically expensive, so basically there's two types of car - taxis and very expensive metal. It's fun to spot the mercs / BMWs / more exotic stuff between the mass of red and white.

Big wheel in front of you makes you go left or right, pedal under your right foot alters velocity, the one to the left makes you stop. [/leslie nielsen]

these cars were made to look like the early 80's buick's pontiac's, ford pintos etc.. they were about a thousand times better at being a 'car' than the above but were very very bland and boring..

my advice if you want retro jap, go for something from the 1970's.. most looked st back then but now they really do have a certain something.. and some (like the MK1 Toyota Celica) are beautiful.. worth a look IMO
