Meet The 'Cougatti' Veyron

It looks like a Veyron (sort of), but it's actually a Cougar. Talk about mutton and lamb...

Despite what you might (briefly) think, what lies beneath this bodywork is not 987bhp, 16 cylinders or four-wheel drive.

Instead, horror of horrors, this Bugatti Veyron replica is actually a Mercury Cougar.

For those who can't remember the Cougar, we've provided you with a picture of one in original form (to the right - and our sincerest apologies to those who do remember it).

It was one of Ford's less successful coupe attempts (although, coming after the deeply lacklustre Probe, it seemed positively magnificent) and, although badged as a Ford in Blighty, it got Mercury branding in the US.

As one of the less appealing results of Ford's 'New Edge' design philosophy of the late 90s, the transformation from 'Cougar' into 'Cougatti' is arguably a visual success, but we guess that the bodywork runs up a bill that the chassis and drivetrain can't afford to settle.

You see, underneath the swoops and curves lies a 2002 Cougar V6 auto, meaning front-wheel drive and a pretty woossy 168bhp. Hardly the stuff of 200mph dreams.

And the chap who was selling it on a certain US auction site (the item has now ended) wanted a starting bid of $89k (around £55k). Still, compared with the £700k or so it'll set you back to get hold of a genuine used Bugatti Veyron, you might think that's a bit of a steal. Until, we suppose, you actually have to drive it somewhere...

That's actually one of the better replicas. Still a NO though

This would be ideal for the Harrods super car circuit.

10/10, that's awesome. It is my ambition in life to get one of those. Either that or a 360 MR2 or an F430 Pug 406 Coupe. What do you guys think has the greater kerb appeal?

Whilst the snobs on here like to slag off other people's cars it's a bit much when the staff do IMO.

Lets see what YOU have managed to make shall we ?

A lot of work went into that and it looks a damn site better than most cars on the road.

Don't know what the interior is like, but with proper badges and wheels, it isn't a bad effort. In passing it would quite convincing.

Not sure about its scale next a real veyron though.

Still a big no no in terms of buying something like this.

Looks pretty convincing, but until equally affordable and convincing replica mansions in replica desirable neighbourhoods are invented it won't be kidding anyone.

Both are matched for top (legal) speed in the UK however, although the original does have 2 seconds enjoyment getting there.

Seems like a sensible choice to me, and a great effort!

It has 168bhp and front wheel drive ... how is it one of the better replicas?

There are Jaguar C & D-type replicas out there, for example, that have the same running gear, the same basic engine, the same suspension layout and the same power levels as the original. Some of them can fool people who've raced the originals. Yet I'd hazard a guess that someone who's driven a real Veyron would sense a slight performance deficit with the Cougatti.

I'd have to agree. Bigger rubber and he's there. I could do no better so take my hat off to the chap.

Thats a very good point! I live in a reasonably good area but if the lad down the road, who had an MR2 360 replica, had this i would be as unconvinced as i was when i saw the 360, which was rather a good replica too!

A bit like a diamond encrusted mens watch. I wouldn't like to be seen by the guys with a real one and a fake could only be worse.

No dude, why waste all that money on something that you can legally only do 70 in anyway? Idiots buy Ferraris and Bugattis, sensible people buy a replica and save the money. I love the look of the F430 reps.

I understand your point but very often the replicas are rather obvious and the only people you fool are kids and people who couldnt care less what you are driving. I have always considered the point of cars like this is performance so without that they seem a little limp, if you know what i mean??

I dont have an issue with replicas though. A Ford V8 powered Cobra or GT40 replica would have my cash if i could afford it, GT40 first!!biggrin

Don't wory about performance, like I said, you can only do 70 anyway. The important thing is the imagine it creates. People will look and think you're successful.
