996.2 Stereo Upgrade Options
Discussion
Hi. Just in the process of buying a 996.2 C4. Although it will mainly be used as a weekend car, I am intending on using it for the occasional commute. As such, I'd like to upgrade the stereo which is the very basic stereo, with CD changer.
Basic requirements are DAB radio and iPhone compatibility through a USB and for it to look relatively smart/integrated.
Any recommendations?

Yes.
Buy from here: http://www.vdoshop.co.uk/acatalog/CDD7418UB-OR.htm...
DAB, bluetooth phone integration (works really well) and USB for memory sticks (doesn't charge though IIRC).
I have two, one in my G one in my C3.2. In orange LCD it would fit nicely with a 996. I was thinking of putting one in my GT3 but the car is so original I have bought a cheap Amazon Bluetooth -> FM cig lighter adapter to see how I get along with the standard radio.

Is this a plug and play replacement for the factory CDR23 unit?Buy from here: http://www.vdoshop.co.uk/acatalog/CDD7418UB-OR.htm...

That looks great, thanks. Only downside is I could do with USB that charges, as I was intending on using Waze for navigation, which zaps the battery.Buy from here: http://www.vdoshop.co.uk/acatalog/CDD7418UB-OR.htm...

Isn't the factory unit a Becker?
My '87 C3.2 had a modern Becker Grand Prix very similar to the 996 units and it was a plug and play replacement for me. Let me take a pic of the pack of the manual to show the plug size.

Yes, factory Becker.
Please let us know if it’s plug and play.
If you buy from BergvillFX: https://www.bergvillfx.com/index.php/products/car-...
Then you can buy a suitable adapter harness that makes it plug and play: https://www.bergvillfx.com/index.php/products/car-...
He's also a nice chap who will answer any install queries you might have.

Does anyone know how the bluetooth works on these VDO sets?
I swapped my OEM unit for a Pioneer with BT, but my phone still doesn't work due to the way the head unit distributes voice calls, and how the Porsche speakers are set up... I did some reasearch, and seems this is something to do with the head unit outputting voice calls to front speakers only, and the Porsche speaker design not working with this... I would need to start cutting the harness, and I don't want to do this.
Porsche speaker set up works fine with full speaker distribution of voice calls... any idea if the VDO units output like this?

Well timed post. I've just ordered the CDD7418UB-OR from VDO-shop.co.uk for my C2 (3.4) as part of some interior tweaks (e.g. center console delete). I'll post a pic or two when it arrives (whats in the box) and installation.
Thanks that would be really helpful as I do like the look of this and am quite tempted - but it's been quite a few years since I got involved with installing car stereos!Edited by Bloitus on Wednesday 8th August 13:16

Seems fine for voice calls on the one my G-wagen that has 4 speakers... My Carrera only has 2 and a sub!I swapped my OEM unit for a Pioneer with BT, but my phone still doesn't work due to the way the head unit distributes voice calls, and how the Porsche speakers are set up...
