996.1 - Do I go for a 4 or a 2
Discussion
The RPM car looks good value to me. A manual m030 car with 70k miles and fpsh is worth a premium. This one comes from a well respected specialist, with probably £2500 of pre sales work and a clean bill of health.
However those don't look like hard-back sports seats to me, which in combination with grey leather (which I tried but cannot abide) would put me off.

Loads of black interiors out there, it's by far the most common.
Really would not entertain repainting or retrimming the interior, costs a lot and will probably decrease resale value due to non-originality. Keep looking!
I'd say go for either a 2 or 4S, the 4 is in a bit of no-man's land: same narrow body but heavier than the 2, doesn't have the brakes/suspension or good looks from the 4S.
But can you really say no to this... still turn back to look at that ass every time I park

I agree re the leather. There's a lot of it, and recolouring or retrimming will be very expensive.Really would not entertain repainting or retrimming the interior, costs a lot and will probably decrease resale value due to non-originality. Keep looking!

But as a plain old 4 owner I have to disagree with the rest!
For sure the 2 is the purist choice, especially with a working lsd. The 4 is different, with its own balance of benefits.
The 4S is larger, heavier, greater unsprung weight. I can't see the point myself - unless it's a bona fide turbo, which has different benefits again.
But the OP is asking about 996.1s, so the 4S isn't in play anyway.
Thanks for all the input guys.
I have now bought the 996.1 at RPM......amazing condition for the age.
Also, did not pay list.....but then added lots of extra goodies.........
- Lightweight Clutch and Flywheel
- CRS Sports exhaust
- RSS Engine Mounts
- Anti Roll Bars
- Low temp thermostat
- 18" Gold OZ Alleggerita Lightweight Alloys
- Full Geo Setup for fast Road/Track use
- Racing Brake Fluid
Future plans include recaro pole positions, momo steering wheel and doing the full CSR treatment
As an aside RPM are very, very good people to deal with. Fastidious.
Now the wait begins.......

When I read the advert i thought, "Hopefully they haven't changed the clutch just yet as i would want to put a lightweight flywheel in there."

4: same slender unbloated looks of the 2, but with the additional traction of the 4S and lighter than a 4S as well.Best of both worlds.

All good still. In fact, loving it.
It's a lot more raw than the C4 Tip I had six years ago, mostly as a result of the upgrades I've done but also being a manual with the m030.
In fact, I have barely driven there M5 since it has arrived and so that will go very shortly once I fix a coolant issue it has developed.
With regards ongoing work.....short term, definitely a SSK, possibly a deep sump oil pan, and possibly some Fuchs for my daily driving and keep the OZ's for track only.
Long term.....the full CSR treatment.
