Style of tips has nothing to do with PSE. The oval and figure of 8 ones are interchangeable.
I wouldn't look too hard for PSE because:
1. The standard boxes are made of chocolate and will have probably rusted/seams split by now.
2. There are loads of aftermarket options available. They won't be switchable but will give you the nice flat 6 growl.
1) This is true, has happened to mine. But some point this winter/spring they will be off the car and up to Haywood & Scott who can reweld the seams & give them a bit of love. They aren't in bad condition at all, and it's more preventative, but the switchable functionality is a big plus in my eyes. I wouldn't look too hard for PSE because:

I agree the PSE mufflers will probably be shot by now (corroded and or valves seized) although you'd hope previous owner would have replaced them if shot as he was willing/obliged to spend £9k getting the engine rebuilt... I appreciate some owners spend the minimum they can get away with however, especially if they're offloading the car soon afterwards...
On the subject of the buttons, top right will be PSM switch (factory fit on C4 and C4S), bottom left is normally rear wiper on coupes or roof switch on cabs. Normally PSE switch is middle right, although I accept there are variances to this.

The earlier 996 C4S' that were optioned with a sport exhaust didn't have a switch on the dash at all. They were speed sensitive and would open after 30 mph to minimise noise in built up areas.
All you had to do was disconnect the diode thingy on the board in the footwell and it would stay open.
You can't tell from the exhaust tips either as some had the double ending and some single depending on what was spec'd.
If you're buying a 4S 996 also make sure you add a low temp thermostat too if hasn't already been done and check the front rads they're prone to leaking / corroding.
Also Carbon lifts the slightly drab interior no end especially the rear console section.
Great cars, loved my old seal grey one. i think the scoring and IMS issue is harming their popularity but a sorted car like this one thats been worked on by hartech is one to have.
They're an utter bargain at the moment. I wonder for how long.

Some form of sports exhaust is a must, wether or not its switchable doesn't make much odds for a weekend car IMO. For a daily maybe.
Brilliant cars these, Did a few hundred miles around north Wales's finest over Xmas. I sometimes wish I had rwd but the 4wd is defiantly confidence inspiring in winter and the turbo chassis is ridiculously stable. Very rapid point to point.
Great time of year to buy too! Good luck.
Ps I know of a very nice black and black with Hartech in mcr, mint. Only problem is it's a tip. Owned by the brother in law of one of the lads from Hartech. He's been half heateredly selling it for a while and may be open to offers.

OK, so I've found out details of the rebuild and i'm not sure that it's the full shebang that I'd like, especially the re-rounding of the cylinders sounds fairly short term to me.
Also, the service history goes from December 2012 (60k miles) and isn't serviced again till July 2014 (75k miles), and rebuild in October of 2015 - my guess is the lack of service resulted in it going kaput? Odd that you'd skimp on servicing it but then sink £9k into it to repair it after. Also no service in 2016 again just comes across as a bit un cared for but the engine i guess should be strong due to rebuild.
Does the below look like a comprehensive repair and is there anything missing which would wanted to have been done? FYI hartech rebuilt.
- -Remove engine: Strip & Assess
- Carry out repairs following 5 snapped bolts/damaged threads
- Supply & Fit 1 Nikasil plated aluminium alloy cylinders (number 6)
- Re round remaining cylinders as far as possible & fit restraining rings.
- Prepare for re-assembly
- Re-build with all new gaskets/seals (except valve stem seals)
- New crank shaft oil jets
- Water pump
- 4 cam to intermediate shaft chain rails
- New modified IMS & Stronger spindle
- 3 pistons & crank shaft bearings (big end, main & thrust)
- Replace manifold to catalyst fixings & gaskets
- Re fit to car with new oil/air separator
- Starter motor wiring harness section
- 4 exhaust claims & flywheel sensor
- Supply & fit new oxygen sensor
Thanks,

No worries! Yeh does seem odd with the lack of servicing too... while it's all being done surely you'd just do all cylinders properly.. the search continues :/
Actually quite liking the look of gt3 kitted carreras tbh now, think long term they'll be more classic.
Not a fan personally but each to there own. Fussy. Actually quite liking the look of gt3 kitted carreras tbh now, think long term they'll be more classic.
My choice other than a turbo/4S my choice aesthetically would be a clean manual C2 Coupe.
VS
Yeah I use to hold that view, but having seen a few I can see how in say 10 years time the GT3 kitted ones will be more sought after.
Seen an absolutely stunning C4S convertible at RPM technik which I looooooooove, sadly it's up for £25k which is just a bit too much. Such a shame as it's stunning and has all the right work done.

For the sake of 3K I'd just buy the one you want Lewis! Seen an absolutely stunning C4S convertible at RPM technik which I looooooooove, sadly it's up for £25k which is just a bit too much. Such a shame as it's stunning and has all the right work done.
You can easily spend 3K on bits and bobs for these cars so in the grand scheme of things it's nowt.

Looks a great example, £10k Hartech rebuild, suspension sorted and new back boxes (doesn't say if they're original PSE though?). You can easily spend £5k getting a lesser example up to scratch and that's not even considering the rebuilt engine.
However... it is a Tiptronic cabrio 4S so it's the heaviest/slowest 996 Carrera of them all!

This was silly - should have relined all 6 cylinders. False economy. Shame. - Carry out repairs following 5 snapped bolts/damaged threads
