I'm not a big fan of the 991.2's turbo power delivery so wouldn't buy one even if I had the cash. BUT, I do hold out hope that the next model may be able to change my mind and I might be interested in buying one again. I'm not against forced induction per se, I just don't like massive flat torque lines from next to no revs, lag and reduced response. So I was wondering what people thought Porsche might do next? I'm holding out hope for some Ferrari 488-esque torque curve engineering and response, or possibly even back to a NA engine with some electric "boosting" like a LaF.

What do people think?

As boring as it sounds, I think Porsche will continue with their current heading....namely turbo and (relatively) small capacity engines for the regular 911's and mid-engined sports cars and NA for the GT cars with huge power large capacity turbo engines in the GT2 and Turbo models.

I'm looking forward to see how they market the turbo 991.2 as they will all be turbos by then (apart from the GT cars)

Of more interest to me is what the aftermarket tuners make of the regular 991.2 Turbo engine. I can see them getting around 500BHP from a 414BHP base quite quickly.

I thought the 3.0 turbo engine was brilliant when I had a day at PEC Silverstone, how can you not like huge levels of torque? Drove back home in my 991 50th and although not much different in real world driving I don't know how you couldn't rate the new engine, maybe loses a bit of character in the exhaust note character but the 992.2 is bloody good car - I guess it just shows we're all different

I drove an S and in a nutshell:

1) you don't have to rev it to get the performance, so it's a bit dull.
2) the claim of max torque at 1900rpm or whatever is a lie (unless my car was broke)
3) there's lag below 3k rpm
4) doesn't sound nearly as good

I got back into my BGTS and genuinely thought it was the better sports car.

The base model might fix or at least improve some of those issues given that it should be running less boost.

When all cars are electric the 3.0 turbo 991 will seem a joy to drive!
I think the engines will go turbo, hybrid, electric in that order!

Unfortunately I believe you speak the truth cmoose. It is all down hill from now on. Lag, throttle delay, stuff that tries to think for you and perhaps for most idiots that works. But for people that can actually drive an analogue car it is all woeful. I don't buy new cars but I broke my golden rule and bought one of the last breed of the old school dinosaurs. Not a Porsche. But a true muscle car. What a blast. Will never sell it

I can't imagine that NA will return to mainstream Porsche. As with the manual argument, the majority of buyers aren't bothered by the turbos, if anything they're pleased about them.

Best case scenario in the new paradigm would be taking the tech from the 918 and using that in mainstream Porsche. Maybe a 2.5 flat six augmented by a motor.

Of course the whole thing would be too heavy and no doubt can't be programmed to work with a manual...

But that's the point isn't it? no one except the PH masses drives 10/10 all the time do they, I use my car for the odd casual summer drive out smile

I don't drive at ten tenths anywhere on the road either and yet still seem to go plenty quick enough and overtake things with my measly 3.4 litre 330 bhp NA BGTS engine with only ~230lbft at 2K rpm. Don't know how I survive frankly wink

Its not about driving at 10/10ths all the time with your arse on fire biggrin Its about being involved in making the car go fast and having a deep and involving relationship in how it behaves on the road......rather than just pushing the GO pedal and hanging on.

With regards to the odd casual summer drive out - I find MUCH more enjoyment in trying to make a slow car go fast than driving a fast car slowly.

I think this fits in with the other PH Topic.

Have driven 991.2 don't like it. Had it for a day and driven around PRC. When I got back into my 991S it just felt better to drive.
