996 RS - Brilliant on track, not so comfortable on the road
997 RS - Brilliant on track, as comfortable as a 997.1 GT3 on the road

As a side note, everybody is different, you really should drive them both to decide.
Also, the geo can make a massive difference to both cars!

Would go out and test drive a few but not many around to try out.

PASM criticisms based on track use are valid enough but the opposite is true if the car is used almost entirely on road.
6 is a generation older and it feels it. Both wonderful
Both are also sensitive to and capable of being set up in wildly different ways so be sure you know what geo you are trying when looking. Both are also now very expensive and getting more so.
if its a road car you're looking for a vanilla 997GT3 may be the best choice in VFM terms

agreed with most of the above posts. I've had both, and gone back to a 996 GT3 RS. I prefer it's slightly more hard core nature, and it's the better track car by a surprising margin.
however given that a decent RS is now in excess of £100k I'd be inclined to go for a mk2 996 GT3 clubsport such as this....

Probably and irrelevant question unless you want to import LHD as there are no 6GT3RS cars for sale and very few come on the market. It seems to me that whatever model you want be it 6,7,7.2 GT3 or GT3RS, as things stand, just buy the best of any you can find from one of the proper specialists. It looks like, at least for now, the days of choice have now passed.
Definite difference in 'rawness' from having driven both.
I think historically the difference in price has also helped...ie a cheaper rawer car that was driven more aggressively vs a more expensive slightly more refined one that felt a bit too precious
As the prices converge (or in the case of 7.1RS, the 6RS is already more expensive) you need to be even more confident of what you like about the car.

As Seawise mentioned, the base 996 GT3 gives much of the same experience at a lower price point...you only miss out of the halo collectibility upside (which is a separate debate) and the drama of an RS badge and colour scheme
...but at the end of the day they are all good cars and as someone said earlier, getting your hands on a decent one when you want it is the real challenge

996 gt2 is obviously turbo and a different feel, it is not as light as the gt3 and it does not drive as well on track as the 996 gt3, it is effortless and quite a nice set up for road miles. You have the rev the arse out of the gt3 but i like that. I have always found the brakes on the gt3 far better than the gt2 - they just feel better and oddly they are both running alcons on mine.
997 Gen II is awesome and a far better looking car than the 996 gt3 and it can be made to handle sharper - its much nicer for a longer road trip than the 996 gt3 but i am happy in all cars on long trips. The 997 is well placed on track.
see if you can test drive the 2 to help you decide
