Hi. Just in the process of buying a 996.2 C4. Although it will mainly be used as a weekend car, I am intending on using it for the occasional commute. As such, I'd like to upgrade the stereo which is the very basic stereo, with CD changer.

Basic requirements are DAB radio and iPhone compatibility through a USB and for it to look relatively smart/integrated.

Any recommendations?

Buy from here: http://www.vdoshop.co.uk/acatalog/CDD7418UB-OR.htm...

DAB, bluetooth phone integration (works really well) and USB for memory sticks (doesn't charge though IIRC).

I have two, one in my G one in my C3.2. In orange LCD it would fit nicely with a 996. I was thinking of putting one in my GT3 but the car is so original I have bought a cheap Amazon Bluetooth -> FM cig lighter adapter to see how I get along with the standard radio.
That looks great, thanks. Only downside is I could do with USB that charges, as I was intending on using Waze for navigation, which zaps the battery.

Well timed post. I've just ordered the CDD7418UB-OR from VDO-shop.co.uk for my C2 (3.4) as part of some interior tweaks (e.g. center console delete). I'll post a pic or two when it arrives (whats in the box) and installation.

Thanks that would be really helpful as I do like the look of this and am quite tempted - but it's been quite a few years since I got involved with installing car stereos!

I think this is the head-unit I have, the CDR 220 - it’s the very basic one (with tape player, and CD changer in the frunk), from an early 2002 996.2:

Double checked my head unit when I got home last night, and I've actually got the CR-22 (with CD-changer) - so I'm guessing that's even worse than the CDR-220?!

Anyone know if that's plug and play or needs a harness or other equipment, to swap for the Continental?

So... This guide has a list of a bunch of different porsche headunits and their interface types. Looks like the CR-22, along with a bunch of other units have a becker Be2365 interface (appears to be the same as PORSCHE CR-31) which is the same pinout as my unit, so no wiring harness needed with the continental replacement.

Later units (as alfapork said) use a combination of MOST interface and CR-31 or PCM etc... Again, best to pull your head unit following pelican parts guide above and check the back. Forgot to post the radio keys yesterday - i'll do that when i have time later.
Thanks for the further advice - I look forward to hearing how you get on with the installation
