cayman as a courtesy car
Discussion
my 991.1 went in for a faulty heating issue and I was given a cayman 2.7 2015 car with sport mode plus
had this for a few days and it goes back tomorrow
must say that I am loving it to bits
could not believe that it was a 2.7 - massive performance and sound
the 3.4 must be bonkers
the 911 is a brilliant car but the latest incarnation, & going forward, in my view, is a tourer than a sports car
the cayman is light, responsive and shockingly good
at some point I will migrate to this model- from someone who thought that 911's were the only Porsche to have -- is a hell of a statement

The Cayman is a great chassis.
Jumping from the 911, did you find you drove the Cayman differently? By that I mean more spiritedly?
I understand the 2.7 needs revving to come alive and there is joy to be had from that too.
I had a 987 Boxster as a courtesy car once.....thrashed it to an inch of its life

I hate the 981 2.7 to a point I ask for a Macan if I need a loan car over one of those.
you feel like you are in a gear 20 seconds before the change and it don't get any faster the higher the revs lol
really not nice things imo.
Surely a person with your knowledge and skills, could get the best out of any car.you feel like you are in a gear 20 seconds before the change and it don't get any faster the higher the revs lol

Totally agree. I am a big 911 fan & have owned or driven all models from 964 to 991. Enjoyed my last 911 - 997 Gen 2 C2S; but really wanted more of a drivers car but still Porsche. Very nearly bought a 981 Caymen GTS but decided to buy a new 981 Boxster Spyder which I picked up the other week - both of these cars IMO are better drivers cars, handle better than most 911s. I took a lot of convincing that I was making the right decision in moving away from the iconic 911. Agree that the 991 is now looking more a tourer. had this for a few days and it goes back tomorrow

If Porsche did variants of the Cayman to match the engine power of their 911 counterparts, I'd question why anyone would bother with a 911! The Cayman is equally as well built, the rear seats in the 911 are pretty much pointless anyway, and the Cayman has the engine in the right place for perfect balance.

Couldn't agree more. Would love a Cayman with the 3.8 turbo unit in it (runs and hides)
I've had a few 981 loaners and enjoy them. Not enough to replace the 911 though. It's partly the engine, so we can blame Porsche for that.
In the Cayman there's a strange air pressure or resonance thing that goes on and I'm not keen on it. Never noticed it in the Boxster.
Plus I need the back seats.

Hi chaps
Picked up the 991 & dropped off the Cayman this morning & when I got in it, it felt like I had dropped off a fit supermodel, lithe girlfriend & picked up a fat cousin who is going to be with me for the next year. My 991 is beautiful, fast & technically brilliant but it's no longer a sports car in the truest sense. I will think long & hard to see if I go future 911 again, if I don't get a Cayman S I may go for previous 911 incarnations as they have fire in their bellies.
Gotta run, fat boy 911 needs cereal & a spanking.

Easy to overstate the differences.
The 911 and Cayman of the same vintage are very similar cars indeed - weight, size, brake feel, etc are all very similar. The big differences are in handling characteristics and the ride idiosyncrasies of the 911. Most people will never notice the differences in handling, and almost nobody mentions the ride differences (although they are very pronounced between the 987 and 997, although less so 981 to 991).
I think the 997 is a more engaging drive than a 981, but I agree that the 991 is very sanitised. To be honest, though, the 981 has too much grip and too little power except, I guess, in its highest power versions.

A bit snobbishly, always saw the Boxster/Cayman as just a 'cut price 911'. These posts make me wonder if they are now actually the true successor for the 911, and the 991 is more of a modern day 928.
That's exactly how I see the 911 vs the Boxster/Cayman. Looking down at the cars at PEC this week from the restaurant, it's very clear that the 911 has turned into a tourer when compared to the Cayman.I think it all boils down to the size
Sports cars (in my opinion) need to be small enough to feel nimble and give you options when threading them down a road but they also need to be fast and involving. The Cayman gives you the small biddable nimble car feeling and the 991 does not.
The general rule for me is If I can reach into the back of the glovebox from the drivers seat then the car is the right size for me

Unless you actually need the extra seats, or want the kudos I think it's very hard to justify a 991 over a 981. The 981 rides and handles better and is trimmed to a similar standard. Now the 781 has gone 4 pot that will pursuade some that the engine is a reason to buy 991.2 and doubtless that was part of the reason for taking the Cayster in that direction.

The 911 have always been 2+2 GT cars never seen the appeal to date.
My 1st Porker was a 2005 Cayman S as it was the 1st car they made I liked the sound and look of.
I'm a 911 fanboy though and through! Don't/didnt really give a st about the rear seats, for me it was always about the weight distribution. My 1st Porker was a 2005 Cayman S as it was the 1st car they made I liked the sound and look of.
Slowly, as generations of the 911 pass, the handling characteristics of the rear-engine layout has been engineered out.... which is a shame in my view.
