Cayman GT4 - Porsche now accepting deposits. (Jan 2015.)
Discussion
I have my deposit in, paid Tuesday morning 9am, spec number by late afternoon, Comm number back to me by 5pm, I believe I am in the top 5 of orders. Now we just wait I guess? I really hope I get a slot, had my LOI in a while back, so pleased I did that.
Dilemma. I have a 2013 Exige S V6 in the garage, paid the £7k for the 430bhp pack fitted by Hangar 111, larger fuel tank etc so it is a proper track monster, quicker than the Cups I have tracked it with. Do I keep and find some extra space for the GT4 assuming I get one, or move it on knowing it won't get used once I have a GT4. I am genuinly torn. Am I temping disappointment by assuming I will even get a GT4?
Last point I could do with some help on, my local Porsche specialist says the PCCBs will get munched as I track my cars hard, he says the steels are by far the best way to go for firm track use, but the Ceramics weigh nearly 50% less than the steels and therefore enhance the driving experience considerably, especially at speed due to the lower rotating mass etc. blah blah. Anyone got a view on this? Thanks in advance.

Hard track use - steelies all the way unless you're up for mega bucks brake swaps for the carbons every 6 or so track days. Call your parts department at the OPC and tell them you want new front and rear discs and pads for your cayman GTS. Sit down and have a stiff drink before he answers (these should be cheaper than the ones on the GT4). Dilemma. My friends get around 15-20 sympathetic trackdays out of a PCCB rotor (with daily pad changes). GT4 rotors might last a bit longer as the car is lighter and the rotors are oversized. I believe GT3 Rotors are £10k for a full set and the GT4 uses the same parts.
Pad selection is limited compared to steels and I know of one case where a driver chipped a rotor from landing in the gravel.
I wouldn't bother speccing PCCB for serious track work. If it's just 2-3 days a year then you're probably fine. There's no denying that PCCBs are the better choice if cost is no factor.

if you think you are top 5 I am sure they are building more than that lolno idea what a spec number is or a comm number is though, it is more sales speak, as no one else has talked about those for this car or for the 991 GT3 orders.

Comm number is Porsche speak for commission number, which my dealer tells me gets the order logged with Porsche, which I have confirmation of and receipt for. He does go on to say that this is not a guarantee of a car though, even with being one of the first through.
I have never found spending £80,000 so difficult before!
Thanks for the advice on the brakes, steels it is.

Nope, they stopped taking deposits on Thursday/Friday depending on which dealer. The car is already massively over subscribed.
That might be the case with you OPC but mine called on Wednesday as I had a LOI with them since July, popped in on Saturday and paid my deposit to get my allocated slot and build number etc. They had already received 7 deposits but my place was reserved as 5th. I thought I was in the first 2 but I guess some serial GT2/3 and 918 buyers had bumped me down the list. Can't complain although I have history with them I'm not exactly a big hitter for them.I was replying to the question on whether OPCs were taking as many deposits as possible to increase the UK allocation, which is not the case as they have stopped taking all new deposits. Of course they will take them for those on the LOI list that have not yet done so.
There are already over 800 confirmed dealer orders worldwide for the GT4 in with Porsche comms numbers, my dealer showed me my number today which was 397. He was at pains to say this still will not guarantee me a car yet though.

I believe some OPCs are taking as many deposits as possible to increase their allocation regardless of the number of LOIs they already had. Despite the later ones having a snowball in hell's chance of actually receiving a car. Cynical but true...Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
