Just been to a smaller back street type outfit for a look see. Guy was recommended to me. Does smart repairs and small scrapes or more serious type repairs but nothing to do with insurance companies. So just simple paying customers. Anyway he had a look and said he can repair everything except the side skirt which is mangled. So I need to buy one of them. Then he can pull the dent out and do his magic.

Then before he started talking money I mentioned a wrap to colour change the car. He sent me down the road to someone he knows who does wraps. So the wrap guys had a much bigger unit and a few cars there being worked on. We had a chat about wraps and I was a bit overwhelmed by all the colour choices. They quoted me 2500 to wrap the car any colour I want.

So the idea is the first guy would prepare all the bodywork but not paint the car. He would sort out all imperfections. He would use primer on any areas he works on. Then the wrap guys just wrap straight onto that. The wraps guys said they need 10 days to do the wrapping.

So I went back to the first guy to talk money for the repairs with no paint. I told him they had quoted me 2500 for the wrap and he seemed surprised by that. So I asked if he could paint the car a different colour and he started talking about door shuts and I said I don't care about them because the wrap guys were going to leave those black anyway. So he said Yes he can do it less than 2500.

So I think that's a result. I'm going to do that with him. This guy will fix the car and paint it whatever colour I want. All I need to do now is decide on the colour.....

£7500 to £2500. I'm fick but that sounds like a third of the price to me.

Ask to see examples of his previous work. If it's to a standard that you like then it's a bargain.

(And I'm entirely with you about paint vs. wrap. The only advantage I can see of wraps is that it protects the paint underneath.)

The car needs fixing and I'm not too fussy with my cars. Especially this one which has been bashed about. So I'm happy to take a punt. How bad can it be. As long as its presentable I'll be happy. Like I say he has been there for years and he was recommended to me.

Keep us posted. £5k in the kitty is never a bad thing to have.

Pop up some photos of the final result - if it's up to snuff then you'll never know that the biff ever happened!

A nice decision to have to make!

The palette of classic Porsche colours is within reach, I presume? Aubergine? Ice green metallic? Both lovely, and I'd love to see a 981 in Aubergine.

I think changing colour is a terrible idea. If he seems half decent I would just get it repaired and the repaired sections painted original colour, and have done with it.

Thats what I'm thinking.

I think the faces where the wheel bolts sit are supposed to remain unpainted, otherwise there's a risk of the bolts not gripping properly and they loosen over time.

Both my sets of OEM GT4 wheels were done this way from the factory.

Its not paint its powder coat. I have used other wheels like this and never had a problem.

Re-torque them after their 50-100 miles use, and you're good to go.

Gotcha. Just thought I'd mention it, I didn't realise it only applied to paint and not power coating smile

It just depends how hot the wheels will become.

I made this mistake on my 964RS and at Cadwell Park the wheel nuts worked so loose that there was an unexplained clunk coming out of Mansfield and a quick return to the paddock before the Mountain ....

Luckily I had all the wheel nuts, but it was a shock.

Powder coating is fused by heat and re-softens with heat ... removing the torque which is holding the wheel nuts tight ... etc.

The pink ones !

Changed ...

I had a little drive round today. Tyres feel good. Car drives absolutely fine. Definitely rides over bumps very well. I think the steering feels lighter but I can't be sure.
