Took mine to brands with the new MPSC2s. Wow! They are really grippy and it's like the hotter they get, the better they are. Feel from them is exceptional on track and they barely go off. Also, they don't squeal...at all...ever. At first I thought I wasn't trying hard enough, so I pushed harder in the dry, invoking a slide, but still no squeal..weird but very cool!

I find they go off after about 6 laps in the summer, the weather ATM helps keep them a bit cooler, but get them to > 60degree and they start to feel greasy. They do heat up fast though so hence a good road tyre still.
So they did get a bit greasy but only upto a point. They didn't get greasier and greasier and greasier until they feel like they're about to delaminate. I thought that they were excellent. Bit hairy in the wet when you're on it but magnificent in the dry.

So mine is going through rear pads like they are going out of fashion.

I reckon the diff has stopped working and the PTV is working the rear brakes harder to compensate (as this wasn't an issue in the past).

I'm thinking I'm going to replace the diff with an aftermarket item. There are two diffs I'm thinking about, the Quaiffe ATB, which seems good value and gets good reviews or the Wavetrac one, which is my preferred option at the moment as it seems to be a non-service diff but also works under braking and with one wheel in the air. You also have options to tune the diff to suit your requirements, which seems cool.

Anyway, anybody on here with experience of both? Which would you go for?

Really is it PSM? In any case, it's killing the rear brakes, which is bloody annoying.

Suspect a more aggressive diff will sort it out.

I see - so it's PSM causing it, I need to turn off PSM on track days and a more aggressive diff won't help. Is that about right?

def PSM off and see if you can get the light still to flash, if so change driving style ;-)
Ok thanks - in the mean time I need a new set of RS29s on the back!

Took mine for a long weekend blast yesterday. Single figure temperature, but the sun was shining hard and the road was dry. Absolutely loved it. Needs a clean desperately now though, absolutely caked in crap.

Would really like to take it on a Europe road trip this year!! Anyone else up for it?

CAYMAN R EURO TRIP 2017
Sounds like fun! If I can get some childcare sorted, would be a good trip for me and the Mrs.

Chaps - if somebody is at home - would you mind measuring the size of the battery? I think it's 31.5cm but just want to be absolutely sure - need to get a new battery.

Thanks and Regards

31cms (but it's a Bosch rather than the tat Porsche fit OE)
Thanks buddy - that's what I'm going to switch to - have a decent conditioner too, so it should be fine for years!

Well yeh definitely, but the for the colour ..... biggrin

p.s. was it specifically a battery in a CR you measured for JP? ears
Bit nosey aren't you ????

But I can confirm it was specifically a battery and definitely not any other part of the car's electrical system tongue out

Might have been in a Cayman R, couldn't say .......
rofl
They're all the same size anyway in 996 and 986 onwards... anyway double checked this evening and 31cm is definitely correct.

Blimey mate, Welcome to the fold!

Now another quick question about the battery - Bosch one was delivered today with the blanking pugs in it (which I removed) But Porsche has a cable that fits into the top of the battery (where the transport blank was) are you meant to plug that cable into the space where the transport plug was - there's nowhere else to put the thing!

Cheers

Yes that's it Slippy - the drain tube. I've plugged it in same spot as you have it. The R will grow on you - especially if you upgrade the brakes which are st as std!

The real problem with the Cayman R is what you swap it for. It's such a good road car and surprisingly good on track that there really isn't much that makes sense. I do love the new Lotus Sport 380 but it's pretty expensive. And the Elise Cup 250 should also be a riot on track but every time I get into the Cayman and go for a hoon, I struggle to imagine parting with it especially as it's losing no money. Hmmm.... decisions, decisions...

As the S4 is sealed and cannot be topped up or leak, I just left it unplugged.

The R brakes are not that st, it's in the top cars for braking and came 37th beating an exige and f430. Google from 100 to 0 the 50 best braking cars :-)
I got the S5 - told it was the new technology - platinum range instead of blue and only £20 more than the S4. Still a lot cheaper than the Porsche battery with its added Porsche tax.

You're right, the brakes aren't that st but they are the weak point of an otherwise exceptional car.

I have Bosch S5 battery in mine.

Looks like this http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/p/-/-/-/-/?444...

But buy from Tayna batteries as they are cheaper. I can send you the exact details if helpful?

I use a plug-in charger by C-TEK - they are very good and I have an adapter which allows you to charge from the cigarette lighter which is very convenient.

Excellent, thanks!

No need re. the charger - seems like the battery is coping with a week's inactivity now & it's getting well used at the weekends so should be fine for a bit!
Hmmm... mine was fine, passed its MOT without any issues. 2 days later the battery died having literally started first time in the morning. Following that the battery wouldn't hold a charge. Mine will be staying with the battery conditioner to prolong the battery life.

I guess you're referring to the original Moll that suddenly died? If so, I believe the crappy Molls are known to suddenly die whether they are trickled charged or not. Mine is still on the Moll but I have a spare battery at the ready for the day when it suddenly gives up.
'They all do that' No seriously, the Bosch S5 battery on my 997 died suddenly last month. I'd read about it happening and a buddy of mine said it happened on his '11 Cayman S too late last year, but it's still quite shocking to have no car when you turn the key. It's down the the crank power needed to turn over the engine which sucks the life out of them. My battery was new to the car when I bought it six years ago along with the alternator, and it's been connected to a maintenance charger virtually every night since then but still shuffled off without warning. Generally if you get more than four years out of any battery you're doing well.
Yes this is the problem - all batteries will have this issue. Trickle charger is key! My battery lasted 5 years pretty much to the day.
