A great example of why prices are going up, but not necessarily values. When it sells for £150,000 everyone will report back that it sold for £225k and I'm sure the new owner (if indeed there is one) will keep shtum about the price they paid in the hope that when they turn it over 12 months later they will have reached a new high.
There seem to be plenty about for sale - always makes me chuckle when the same cars are for sale but the price keeps going up.
Anyway - can someone please explain to me what is sooooo desirable about these cars?
UPDATE - reading the previously mentioned blog it seems that car has been for sale since at least September (original price £150,000). So why put the price up if it hasn't sold? Presumably they saw this 2.7 MFI Targa sell at Artcurial for E232,400 in November (a world record?) after it had been previously sitting with a dealer in Holland priced at E189,500.
Oh, the irony.
I have to confess to being slightly aghast that a LHD Impact Bumper Targa made that sort of wedge. There seem to be plenty about for sale - always makes me chuckle when the same cars are for sale but the price keeps going up.

Targa's are the runt of the litter and these early cars are neither fish nor fowl. Basically you're getting the RS motor which is a cracker but these cars aint an RS!! What they are is a rather bland rot box! Plus is this thing one owner low miles original paint two sets of keys original receipt?!
Let them all get on with it. I daresay we'll look back in a short space of time and prices will have lept even further north...
A new example of speculative uber nonsense!
cabs are not what the hardcore want and whilst this is unquestionably a tidy old one owner girl I have to say per title

Are these cars actually selling? I think the market has passed its peak to be honest - the rate of any price increases have certainly slowed down of late.
Yeah, the bottom's fallen right out. These knackered 1973 Recaro sports seats just sold for £4800 vs a £7-800 estimate.

Like property in London, things have stabilised. I doubt we'll be seeing the average price of say a sound RHD SC coupe at 10 grand more than they are now in a years time.

Hold on, you can't take a pair of seats that done very well at auction because someone wanted their car "right" and compare it to the A/C 911 market as a whole.

100k RHD Speedsters aren't selling. Likewise the 80 grand silver G50 coupe.
I see no rampant increases on the horizon for "cooking" air cooled machines. RS perhaps. Porridge? no.

You can't compare water cooled 911's to A/C. They are utterly different and provide a more rareified experience. Bit like S&M. You pay a lot of money to suffer! Some derive pleasure from it and pay handsomely for the privilige!
As I said I see no rampant increase in the near future. But the days of a really good 3.2 are long gone at £30k. You might get lucky by private treaty grapevine style but an original car throughout that has been cherished from day one is a very rare beast indeed. I have no interest in restored as they are never the same. It is not cost effective to comprehensively rebuild a 3.2 a la 2.7RS. It cannot be debated that once a car needs restoration via welding, new interior, rebuilt running gear it is worn out!
On that basis the clever money goes on a machine that has never needed any restoration. I don't buy into "all 3.2's are rotten". There are some jems out there and they won't be cheap.
Whilst the old addage of "buy the best you can afford" is never truer with an old Porsche it really is the sensible way forward.

Can't comment on this car but be wary of "fully rebuilt" ones that must have been dogs to start with. Suffice to say the standard of workmanship varies a lot - even among so called top names in the business. You are much better paying top dollar for a pristine original low mileage car that was built by the factory in my opinion. I have tried both routes and will always go the latter from now on.You can't compare water cooled 911's to A/C. They are utterly different and provide a more rareified experience. Bit like S&M. Was sold 3 weeks ago for £54k by its previous owner. It's now on for £110k with the 'SCOM tax' applied! What makes it "special" to warrant such a liberty taking price? it's an impact bumper targa. Big deal. It's no RS. It's not one owner sub 20k miles.
It's I daresay been rebuilt body wise. We know the engine's been done.
All in all it's unremarkable and if you want an IB Targa go buy a tidy G50 get the same car in essence that's had 10 years of Porsche development.
Oh and will be 30ish so you save over 70 large!

Welcome to the new world. They're not making any more A/C 911's and cherished unrestored examples are simply not available. Unlike say a 328GTB/S where there are many low mileage cars underused garage queens.
The fact is the 911 was under valued and its familiarity bread contempt. As this thread continues values continue to reach dizzy new heights.
I concede we've moved to a new paradigm...
May as well make it £70k! I mean who's counting?!
8" Fuchs on a '79? tsk tsk. Perhaps not as original as one is lead to believe.... (no mention of original paint so we'll assume it's been resprayed then..!)

I suspect many a man over the age of 60 would scoff at the price given you could buy them in the 70's for a tenner.
On that basis I fear the new buyer cares not about prices of yore and accepts what they now are.
Aren't we all doomed to living in the past and reflecting on what stuff used to cost? I hate to say it but even if there is a blip or crash prices (like houses) seem only to go up.

Like some have said. A fool and his money are easily parted. It's made sense for dealers to wait for that fool to come along rather than actively selling cars. That's why certain dealers have been willing to increase prices by >£10k increments even though that particular car may have been in the showroom for 12 months.
The economic fundamentals are changing but no doubt it will take time for pricing to 'normalise'.
I hope you're right but I feel you may be wrong because if you actually try and find a good original patina collectable thats not been restored certainly in the air-cooled market its very difficult indeed to find a good one - that 911virgin 88 carrera probably already sold 5 times over. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Older stuff i.e 60's is very hard to find original. I have a few original bits and they are leagues ahead of any machines that have been faffed up.
An original unpainted RHD G50 coupe is all but impossible. In fact any decent G50 is rare as they are all rotting out through be such a good car and being used in their day.
Prices for good cars of all marques will continue to climb...
