Other than booking a hotel in Budapest haven’t done any real planning. Was generally assuming a straight line from the tunnel through Belgium, Germany (hopefully some unrestricted autobahns), Austria (we’d like a couple of days in Vienna) and then it’s only a couple of hours to Budapest.

I was thinking of going more north through Germany to Prague. Then down to Budapest. Vienna on the return leg.

If going towards Vienna maybe cut a little more south through Germany, hit the black forest before cutting across southern Germany. The autobahn in Southern Germany is great for longer quiet unrestricted sections. Then into Austria. Depending on where you enter Austria, lots of options for mountain passes.

Depends on whether it is the journey or the destination.

For me, this Dracula trip is all about the destination, so just going to click off the miles till I get to where it's all about the road.

An insurance question

I have just been informed of this by REIS

"Your current Underwriters ( Markerstudy Insurance Services Ltd ) have suspended all new business and renewal business across their motor book as they are moving to a co insurer basis due to capacity levels

We are unable to provide any standalone private car insurance and may also be unable to provide terms for standard classic cars that are not motorsport use"

They were never the cheapest but we're always helpful, included 5 track days and never had any issues with all the modifications of my cars. They were a little pernickety about EU travel requiring detailed travel itinerary though.

So any suggestions for multi car cover, trackday and modification included?

Thanks

Hi Cake Eater

Insurance! I started a similar thread earlier this week under the track day heading in general gassing. As you will see from the thread this seems to be a problem with Markerstudy and it seems difficult to organise similar cover with other insurers. One contributor suggested Footman James and I haven't tried them yet. A-Plan have offered purely road cover for my modified car but I'm probably going to go back to my fleet road car insurers, Zurich Private Clients, who offered three track days from memory, but at rather a large cost.

Big fan of your thread which has so far successfully deterred me from moving from my Gallardo to a 599!

All the best

Hi eye121

I'm a little sad that I've put you off such a great car. When I started my search for something a bit special that I could afford (man maths afford not ex wife reality) I gave a lot of consideration to a gallardo. But I read too many threads of cars leaving owners stranded.
I know the 599 has been on the back of a lorry a few times but they seem dim and distant memories.
That she was more reliable on the Germany trip compared to a Merc GTR and 570s always makes me smile
wink
Big bills go without saying especially new clutch, diff and CCM etc
Servicing obviously also racked up the bills but then again I've racked up the miles.

Definitely a very expensive donkey.

As for the insurance I'll take note of suggestions and give Footman James and A-plan a call

Enjoy biggrin

Today I received an email from REIS with a renewal offer, stating "transferring the scheme to First Underwriting Limited" so basically the same multicar with 6 trackdays included.

I made a few phone calls just to check if the quote was competitive.
Footman James can only offer 3 trackdays with a single policy.
Howdens (formerly A-plan) no trackdays
Locktons can provide cover but only trackdays for the Ferrari, not for the GT86 or Caterham

Then I had the absolute best call with https://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/performance-car-in...
They asked who my current insurer was, value of the quote and what insurance I wanted. I am little circumspect about giving too much details about another companies quote but thought "why not?". Their reply "Take it! Very good quote!"

So REIS it will be.

Brother DeejRC the 599 is still in the care of MDL. Ferrari have delayed the CCM till December so I've decided to replace the right 3/4 window to glass while waiting.

The PPF is getting redone on the front bumper after painting the scruff from a high curb in France.

And work means I haven't been back to the UK. I'm hoping January I'll be driving the 599 again
Cake, a long-time lurker to this thread. Just curious about what you do for work as after reading this I am considering a career change smile

Hope you're enjoying the 599 - keep on trucking!

Good Day and Happy New Year to you.

I am looking forward to enjoying the 599 again in a couple weeks.
I am in exploration for that which powers our shared passion. Driving the 599 lots keeps me in a job so I am happy sad every time I fill up. Unfortunately the job is keeping me away a lot at the moment but then it does pay the 599 bills.

All the best to you if you change, I have loved every minute of this job apart from the last 7 years tongue out

Hi again Cake

Through my current fleet broker, Nowell and Richards, I've been offered a Chubb policy with track cover included for a decent price. It's available for 'modern classics' of at least fifteen years old and might be an option depending on the year of your 599.

Deterred from changing my Gallardo to a 599 was a bit tongue in cheek but yes, the cost of shock absorbers, brakes and petrol would be a step up for me and I love the relative simplicity of the baby Lambo.

Hi eye121,

Sounds like a good deal, I've just renewed with REIS. My 599 will be 16 this year so would have qualified.

I recently watched jayemm talk about F12 costs
https://youtu.be/dcobb9yLuKc?si=IfJp4brij3g3RYGZ
And I really think that his costs are just normal running costs.

I've been lucky with the suspension. No leaks though I believe from the internet a common problem.

There's a Polish company that can rebuild them at a considerable saving to Ferrari who will only replace.
https://nagengast.pl/en/kategoria-produktu/ferrari...

However one of my long term plans is to go to Leo
https://www.madenoracing.com/more-news/306/
I've been chatting with him via email for spec and he's been extremely helpful in the interim.

As for brakes, I could have changed to steels from giro disc, really wanted gen 2 CCB from carbobrake but production time meant I went with OEM that have literally just arrived at MDL. But I did get a good saving, nearly 6k less than eurosparrs quoted just for the CCM discs.

And Fuel eek

But the 599 does leave me with a smile

MDL have also been treating the leather for me

I did not want that shiny slippery silicone finish to the leather and wanted to keep that mat look while trying to stop or at least arrest a little the cracking that was starting, particularly around the seat ot the seats (if that's such a thing).
