How much of a gasser are you?
Discussion
I had switched it on last night. I went to look again now - and it's still on. Pressed submit again anyway. And now I can see it again. How very odd.

Edit:
agreed as well.
JonRB said: I'd humbly suggest that it should be on by default or the very people who will benefit the most (ie. newbies) will not get the info.

Ted, just enabled the show footnotes thing in my preferences - like it. You have definitely struck the right balance (again) here with the way you have done it.
Now I've just got to stop getting distracted by bloomin' work so I can increase my number of posts.
edited to say have I really only been coming here 2 months? It's getting hard to remember life before PistonHeads!

Ted
I agree with derestrictor, this is becoming like the 'black balling' system used in 'exclusive' clubs......
If everyone is going to judge each other via this new 'respect' system then you should be able to see who has judged you.
There is a danger that we will only ever see PC replies so that people can maintain a high 'respect' rating.
Personally, the only people (as in real life) whose opinion I respect are those that are prepared to go public with it.
That is said from the viewpoint of a middle of the road 50% respect rating from 4 unknown persons.....

You don't have to be PC, you just have to be Right!
... in the eyes of some at least. Ergo differing opinions will count, detbates continue and so on.
I think it will only be an issue for those that are consistantly trollite, for whom it will act as a signal that maybe they should cool it.
Having taken a look a few profiles, it seems that the "no respect" option is very rarely used. As it is given out by the good folks of PHdom, it should only given out fairly. You don't have to put one on every post you read. Only the ones that stand out as particularly good or bad.
Treated fairly I think the system should work well.
Maybe you guys don't feel you can trust yourselves with the power given offered to you.

IMHO the respect-rating is a pure subjective system.
Whom do you give respect for what?
I give respect for respecting people and constructive arguments, not for having the same opinion.
Who knows, what criteria is used by other people?
Surely, we all do not have the same criteria.
As a conclusion, I would say, we should watch the system carefully, and rethink the use of it from time to time

Bodo I guess you are right, so I decided to drop you from 100% from 6 people to 71% from 7 people.
Sorry mate , have a good Christmas, the Christmas Fair in Frankfurt is very nice this year.

That system is sh*te!!!!
N17TVR, gave you some respect before, because you had the balls to critizize the system.
I keep that respect up, because you had the balls to tell me , that you counted my respect-account down.

Hmmm, is it just me?
I can't see anywhere in my profile editing pages where I can enable the "show footnotes" thing. Also, the box where I can select whether or not I am visible in a list of mates is gone...
Ah well, maybe I just don't post enough?
H
EDITED to say: "DOH! Numpty me did not see new section under "My Info" labeled "Preferences". Oh well, it IS Christmas...

Finally caught up with this thread and all the shenanigans. I must admit that the thought of Ted receiving 'litigous' emails regarding this matter makes me feel both sad and angry.
I am not in full possession of the facts, so can't comment any further, other than to say that I hope the prospective litigant(s) will make a full apology to Ted if it is required.
I know for a fact that Ted would never insult anyone, or jeopardise his excellent forums. Shame on those who insult us all by throwing their weight around.
