At the risk of repeating myself I'm sorry for the lack of response, these days I am not always around so please feel free to nudge me via PM if an answer is needed. That's no problem at all.
It might be best if someone follows Garlick's advice. I won't as I have no real interest in the matter.

So i came in to moan and have found that i'm not the only one to find the sneaky two ads at the left are st ... just adding my vote to get the plain old google ones back!

They might have demands ... but your users prefer the subtle content!

On a 1920x1200 monitor the adverts are visible without having to scroll the page. I also have a lunch break in which I can use the internet for non work purposes.
Your browser window doesn't need to 1920x1200 though. Make it smaller and don't scroll right to the bottom of the page. Pics will hardly ever be visible.

It's cringeworthy that so many people on this thread can't avoid a few pics that owners of this free website use to pay for it.

You say that, but I'm guessing that prior to this new advertising regime, this website did not run at a loss.

Also, traders who regularly advertise in the classifieds have been subjected to quite a high price hike, £50 per month if I'm not mistaken.

My guess is, that somebody at Haymarket has decided that they want to see more profit out of PH.

This all seems to have 'kicked off' since Stuart's departure, so perhaps it can be attributed to the new management.

...and that's a bad thing!? That's how businesses work - grow or die. Last time I checked we weren't living in a communist utopia...

As I've said earlier in this thread, Haymarket are missing a trick not offering a paid for skin without ads. The take-up levels on that would be interesting to see.

Subscription based membership is defiantly the way to go. It's how most forums make the bulk of their money. It also stops all of the whining about ads, as there is a way to get away from them.

Which neither you or I as long term members pay for...

I didn't say it was a bad thing*.

However - if you're going to make sweeping changes to a site - particularly a section that you charge for - then one would expect it to have been tested, and work correctly form the outset.

But when it doesn't work properly, it's difficult to justify the additional charges and all the other 'noise', not so?

  • that doesn't mean I like it - but my ad blocking leaves me with a totally advert free experience, so I'm not bothered.
If it reaches the stage where the site is no longer usable due to advert blocking, I shall simply go elsewhere.

This is true. Some forums I would pay for. These are the genuine not for profit ones.

PH is run for a profit, and I would not pay a subscription - although I would pay for ads, if they were the best place to sell my car.

I believe Garlick has said many times that PH wouldn't introduce an ad-free subscription option. The forums (and free ads for long term subscribers) have to be funded somehow, so what would people prefer - the old Google ads or something else?

Ads that are better targeted to the PH user base is probably what most would find acceptable. There has to be finer control - the Schumacher article being the most glaring example. The ideal would be a combination of PH articles that are flagged when published as suitable for inclusion and external ads that have some interest to the audience that are seeing them.

This has been done elsewhere - in the web design world for example with The Deck. Such an Ad network may not yet exist that allows targeting to the PH user profile - but PH ought to be trying to find it.

Following my earlier post I have just tried 3 links in quick succession that direct me to blocked urls at my work computer.
They were linking to “ad.doubleclick”, “movies.mtv.co.uk” and “eharmony”

And they were all of no relevance to a motoring website.

Please do something about this before access from work computers starts to be affected.

So how do I block thus rubbish on an ipad?

I have one or two of the same stupid things every time.

What's more they look age/gender targeted which I'm not keen on.

Adblocker works for me on Safari on an iPad. Try it and see? I have no ads on any PH site on iPad, Windows PC, Windows Laptop, Windows Tablet. Not a one on PH. Worth a try? Actually it is pretty good on other sites too.
