Please note that AOL appears to be rejecting all emails from PH.

I am replying to people enquiring as to why they're not getting responses to their emails, but my replies are being rejected!

This has been a real pain for me. I had an ad removed from the classifieds as a result of not responding to email. I have contacted AOL support and was refered to this page in their Help section:
Error "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection" while sending email

Error Message: Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.
Account: 'imap.uk.aol.com', Server: 'smtp.uk.aol.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

This may occur because the port used to send email (Port 25) is rate limited to prevent abuse by spammers. To fix this problem, change your frequency of email sending in your email client to 11 minutes or more.

Below are instructions for Microsoft Outlook Express and Outlook. These are the most common email applications. Most applications will be similar.

I suspect this is bollo as it worked fine till last week. I will watch this thread with interest!

It'd be good to find out if you get a resolution to this Ted - the server that my email is sent through has been blocked by AOL as spam so I can't send to them either...

Have you checked that PH hasn't inadvertently ended up on an SORBS type blacklist somewhere?

Checked last week and all was fine.

AOL periodically have blocked our stuff before but it seems more serious this time.

Something has cleared the log-jam because when I got back from work tonight there were five from the last few days that had suddenly come through. I am sure you must have worked some magic Ted. Respect!

With help from my hosting company, we managed to identify the cause and resolve it. It was an issue with the config of our kit.

Scobbo - This is AOL's problem. They have decided port 25 is too popular for spam, so have decided to block it to send outgoing mail. If you are using a party other than AOL, the only way to connect to them is by using a secure 'authenticated' port e.g. 587. According to AOL, most companies will have these.

I contacted NTL to ask for their secure port details and username and auth code, to which they replied 'we only use port 25 Sir!' Great! So now the ntlworld e-mail address I've been using for years and years and everyone contacts me on is next to useless as I now cant send mail. (AOL will also not allow you to send mail from a third party e-mail address - i.e. anything not 'so and so@aol.com' - if you were to set up outlook with their details for sending mail)

This was all done without customer consultation and IMO is a complete disgrace!
