Occasionally searching on PH doesn't return the thread you're looking for, however you can use Google to search PH very effectively.

For example you wanted to find the illustrious "wing'd horse of chav tat" thread simply enter the following in Google.

chav tat "pie & piston" site:Pistonheads.com

That will search for (and return) the beloved chav tat thread.

However if you search for

chav tat "general gassing" site:Pistonheads.com

you will get references to the thread, but not the original as it's in the Pie & Piston.

In a nutshell it's search words followed by (optional) forum name in brackets followed by the all important site:Pistonheads.com filter.

There are more advanced searches possible on Google but I thought this might help those who aren't so familiar with using Google and are looking for that elusive topic.

ETA: Mods, is this worth making sticky for a while till the search facility is tweaked?

You know that, I know that but some of the site users don't know that

And basic my arse, I'm already on this:

www.google.co.uk/advanced_search

Or even this when I miss using extended search strings as a single operator

www.google.co.uk/intl/en/help/refinesearch.html

hehe

The real fun is when you're search for a product and it says "NOT for xyz"...

Trying to exclude the "NOT" but include the "xyz" is always a laugh...
