The problem isn't the number of layers - it's the join between the original layers and the new ones - that can't be made as strong as it was originally done with single/complete woven sheets.
Yes, but I'm saying that if you're prepared to not have it look original, you can add more layers to give those areas back the strength that they once had, no?

I'm a bit surprised about the carbon tub repair. I expected them to strip the car to a bare tub then get it repaired in the specialist's workshop rather than doing it up on Freddie's ramp.
I'm not sure either way is a proper repair, hence why Mclaren won't do any carbon repairs.

You can patch it and make it look as good as new, but it can't have the strength of the original tub because the carbon material isn't all one woven piece (or complete layers of woven pieces).

If you just wanted a light and fairly strong material, you could use fibre glass for a fraction of the cost and hassle of carbon fibre. There's a reason people choose carbon fibre and go through the very complex and difficult manufacturing process.
I'm not sure that's correct. There are ways of making it as strong as the original. McLaren won't do it because they'd rather sell a new tub and patching an old one won't look as good, but if you don't care about how it looks, you can definitely make it as strong (adding layers).

It’s not done with single sheets, it’s a number of components brought together, made from lots of individually cut sheets, to form a single structure…

What ever is happening, he's really getting stuck into it and I appreciate that. Just hoping he doesn't stumble at the last, his choice of 675 colours wasn't what I would have chosen, but he loved it so fair play to him.

I'm no composite expert / DAG man but I've spent a lot of time around carbon tubbed "things" and that to me is eminently repairable via a scarf or step repair. In this case because you need it flat flat (like all the flat) you'd do a scarf repair which would ultimately give you a flat surface repair with essentially uniform stress distribution and low peel stresses around the repair then bag and vac with a hot bonder.

Two things of challenge are the thickness of the carbon you're working with and any unique layup that you'd probably want to replicate in function if not form (but that floor looks fairly boggo) along with the fact that the core has pretty badly delaminated in one area where it's had a whack. The core looked in decent enough nick once they'd chopped the crushed bits out so that is fixable with some careful glue fill.

All said and done it's just a composite tub, no different in repair process and sign off to anything else that's composite and done right it will be just as strong as it was in the first place. At some point in the future you're likely to fly on an aircraft that's had a similar repair!

As he's now said that his aim is maximum Vmax I wonder if the new body is with that in mind. Is he looking for lower drag?

Just seen the reveal of the new bodywork.
Couldn't see it in any detail but it'd be interesting to see how this 'bloke in a garage' designs new bodywork for a car with the intended top speed of over 250mph.
Two words - wind tunnel?

Not finished watching it all yet though.

My guess is they were already evolving the existing P1 GTR package for someone and now brought him onboard for the publicity and to help cover the costs, much like the battery packs etc.

It is the perfect example to do such radical changes on.

Yes, this is the second kit they've done and I suspect it was already in progress, if not finished before Tavarish bought his P1.

Really enjoy Tavarish's videos, but would appreciate it if he'd finish a project. Also, how long can he escalate the outrageousness to capture views?

I guess at least 7-8 more episodes. More will be tiresome if there is more talk than progress in the build.

Yeah I lost interest for a bit when he was bouncing between 7-8 diff projects, even the ones he finished weren't ever really finished (his TT Lambo still has oil issues I believe!). But once he got onto the Murci and Mclaren I got back into it. I like that he's sticking with the P1 for now as we'll hopefully see it done within a year based on his other timescales.

I'm kind of the opposite, I don't mind if he ever finishes them. I'd be just as happy to watch a video now about putting new oil lines on the twin-turbo Gallardo than I would have been if he'd signed it off back in the day.

Some of the videos on Youtube I enjoy the most are the Jay Leno update episodes where he just ambles around his cramped tiny workshop explaining that there's going to be a 6 month delay rebuilding a 1 of 1 packard because he's having to invent a new type of technology or recreate a 14th century method of riveting tin pistons onto stone conrods.

It's just spanner telly, I like it all.

Cheers to that. I'll add in I also like the occasional auction video where I see people bidding 720 money on a Ford Bronco!

Has Freddie given up on the P1 already? It’s been a month since the last update.

Do you follow him on instagram? I’m pretty sure the next video will be a big one.

His Mclaren 675 has had a lot of attention also.

He's been fixing his 675, got an engine in it and has it up and running. Next vid will be on that I imagine. I thnk the P1 is getting a lot of stuff done that's time-consuming and boring so he'll probably need to wait and edit a few week's worth of work into something to put up I expect.

No I just check YouTube for updates, I’m not too big into social media.

Like most content creators Tavarish posts across multiple platforms. On Instagram he tends to preview a lot of the upcoming features that will ultimately make it to his Youtube videos.

Be assured though that there appears to be a lot of progress being made. Certainly the people who thought this project was a fools errand are considerably wide of the mark.
