Some good background chats with him here

He seems to have taken his foot off the gas a bit lately to aid his health, but must be doing well financially, seems very relaxed about the P1 project, so guessing the views have more than paid for the purchase already.

I watched The Late Brake Show one and found it really interesting, I didn't realise he did all his own production/editing/management. No wonder he needed to dial it back a bit. I think he's had massive support with the project which has really paid off with other companies wanting to get involved.

Sounds like it'll be at SEMA in some sort of state which is still rapid progress for this level of build, he's got several irons in several fires so it'll come together pretty quick by the sounds of it.

I hope he does keep the hybrid system and builds a new battery, it certainly seems doable and it'd be a massive step forward that no one's attempted before. As if rebuilding a flooded P1 wasn't enough.

The engine rebuild of his 675LT is interesting too. https://youtu.be/r0ETvWWrgVg?si=viPR3wJyZBhp-U_f

Yeah I watched that yesterday after seeing the video of him with Leno. I wouldn't dream of saying I know more about designing a car than McLaren but watching Tavarish's videos on both the 675LT and the P1 really do highlight some interesting facts about not just the bodywork but also the engines....

Found that one quite interesting. Standard rods looked very ordinary for a £300k+ car to me.

Probably why they were all bent.

They were bent because it was uprated, and of course the uprated ones look great. Std works just fine for std tune. Lots of US seem to moan about McLaren innards, but it is funny how few untuned cars go bang. Thorney even has a video on this.

He's ditching the hybrid system. Ripped all the gubbins out. That's it,

…and in the words of big Duncan Bannatyne, “ah’m out”

Rip out the hybrid and “ground up” rebuild, really you’re in P1 kit car / replica territory for me. About as appealing as those space frame’d Lambos.

I'm out too.

Turning this into some modders idea of what a P1 should be isn't for me. I wish him luck but not going to be following this.

The battery guy said if it was him he's ditch the hybrid system but didn't hear Tavarish saying that that's what he was going to do, he just said that he's got some big decisions to make. Unless I missed something.

You missed episode 10, where he says he’s ripping all the hybrid gubbins out

Real shame he’s ditching the hybrid stuff and at the same time killing off the expected “rebuild” of a P1.

I guess the project suddenly becomes a whole lot easier (so he can rush it for one particular show!) by just converting the car to be a 650/720 etc underneath. That would explain a lot of things such as the loom replacement/dash change etc. and I wouldn’t be surprised if the mechanical hybrid clutch arrangement just gets replaced with a generic Macca gearbox bits so essentially it’s all very similar to his 675 which he knows how it works.

I’ll still be watching, but such a disappointment that he’s essentially shirked a bit chunk of what people were interested in getting back up and running. How much of decision is based on getting it ready for Sema vs not having the knowledge/funds to do properly I guess we’ll never know..

With the extra space freed up from ditching the batteries and hybrid drive, he should go all the way and convert it to NA V12 and manual, or put a massive Chevy V8 in there as a tribute to the old Can-Am McLarens.

Disappointed , as after the V visits, I'd expected a hybrid + system to go in; with all the new tech, batteries and ideas we now have 10 years on...

Rebuilding will be really interesting.

Then its no longer remotely a P1 is it? Its a nothing bodge.

I know residuals are largely irrelevant as its a project to feed YT but its pretty illogical to spend over $500k on a P1 when he could have had a fully functioning 720S for half. I guess the maths works for him and the TV production manager!

SEMA is a convenient excuse but in reality, everyone fawned over Rob Dahm’s stuff at SEMA on multiple occasions when they were only there with Bluetooth driveshafts etc.

Getting it done or done to a certain stage for SEMA isn’t as big a driver as the reality of how much time and how many dollars the hybrid would need to get recommissioned.

It’s an interesting decision to ditch the hybrid drive, albeit an understandable one for simplicity reasons.

I’m not convinced about this whole P1 ‘Evo’ concept but I’ll reserve judgement until I see the car come together more.

Financially, it’s odd. He’s basically ensured it’ll always be ‘that’ P1. It will therefore always be the P1 that was modified on a relative shoestring in a workshop in Florida by a YouTuber.
That surely makes it worth significantly less than an unmodified one - flood title or not.

But I guess the flood thing will always taint it anyway and if they go stratospheric value-wise, it can always go back to McLaren to be put back to standard.
