I love my i3, but I do take issue with BMW's marketing regarding the range.

They quote 80-120 miles range. In everyday driving I think 65-80 miles is more realistic.

i3 has finished being built! ON way to dealer. Hopefully this time next month I'll be driving it.

Thanks Mids, and seeing as the range means I would have to charge it every day anyway then there is no point in driving it like a granny!
Exactly and seeing as the leccy is so cheap you don't worry about how fast you drive. I have a similar commute to yours, there's no danger of running out of battery so I get to enjoy it properly.

Question, the instrument panel screen behind the steering wheel was a small tablet/big phone shape, but the screen only seemed to be a letterbox shape strip across the middle of the panel, is it just that strip as the instrument panel? I thought the screen would have been bigger, the same size as the box like the console screen.
Yeah, it looks a bit naff when turned off but there are a lot of warning lights above/below the strip so it's all used. I read an explanation about the warning lights having to be like that (individual bulb/fuse) rather than having them in a big LCD screen but not sure how true that is.

I'm not sure that they are so far off (at least in current conditions). My average range (driving normally) is 80 miles but I can easily get that to nearer 100 if I drive efficiently. It's easier to get to the quoted electric range figures, than it is to achieve quoted mpg figures in BMW ICE cars.

My longest journey, undertaken on Friday :

I snatched a 20 minute AC charge at Doncaster North FWIW, and burned approximately 2.25 litres of petrol in 155.1 miles.

I have had some journeys where I have tried really hard to drive efficiently and I can still only get 80 miles and that's using Eco Pro+

I'm going to get them to check my car out.

Its difficult with the i3, it doesn't want to go at less than 75mph. + or - 5 mph.

Can you define driving efficiently in your view?

The best I've done on my journey home (60 miles) was an average of 6 mi/kwh which should result in total electric range of 113 miles. That was a warm day (20 C) and probably averaging 50mph on the A34 (rush hour traffic). But never exceeding 60.

eta: there's a bloke on the i3 forum who got 116 miles out of 93% charge with his Rex. So total range 125 miles.

That's good. I'm averaging 3.9 mi/kwh. The car does live on the A1 though.

The following really:
- Gentle acceleration
- Anticipating traffic so using regen to slow for traffic
- Generally low speeds <50mph
- Using Eco route on the Nav
- Using Eco Pro+, i.e. no a/c or heating

I haven't seen 6mi/kwh but I have seen low to mid 5's

Of course!

I do quite a lot of this... However as we are down to the i3 and a 1.2 Polo (bought for daughter to learn to drive) at the minute it would be nice if I *could* extract a bit more range out of it when required...

If you can get mid 5s then you can get 100 mile range. Sounds about right to me.

While we're sharing dash pictures, this is one i took the other day, too flipping close, that was with 10 miles of ultra careful driving, stting it, 40mph on nsl roads driving on ecopro+

While we are talking about max range, what does your display read when freshly charged and switched to ecopro+? mine never goes above 88, EVER, i never get much past 70 miles out of a charge, so i have no idea how slow and careful you'd have to drive to get 100+

Maybe. On a real extended run I struggled to get over 80 - Derby to B'Ham and back via eco route.

How would you ever get BMW's quoted max of 125 though?

presumably on a rolling road with no wind resistance like all the other fuel efficiency 'simulations'

They are looking ahead to the Gen 2 version. smile

120 miles electric power is mighty ambitious
