Well I think I got a deposit down - happened to be up in the early hours this morning so did it on-line on the phone.. BUT no email confirmation yet... have those of you who successfully placed a deposit got any sort of confirmation - will check with the cc provider later if payment has gone out - I may have incorrectly typed my email address given the stupid hour...

Most of us who reserved in a store yesterday got a confirmation email a few minutes later. I expect the whole process has slowed a bit now as the U.S. reservations and the launch came on stream this morning.

I got two emails, one confirming the payment was made and the other with the subject "Welcome to Tesla". In that one, it provides a link to create a password for the account they created for the email you used when you made the reservation.

Once you do that, you are presented with a screen which confirms the date you made the reservation and there's a number in the format "RNxxxxxxxxx", which may be a reservation or build number perhaps?

From Musk's Twitter;

Model 3 orders at 180,000 in 24 hours. Selling price w avg option mix prob $42k, so ~$7.5B in a day. Future of electric cars looking bright!

Staggering really for a car 2 years off!

The guy at the tesla store said he was told that UK buyers would start getting deliveries in 2018. Not that bothered tbh if delayed into 2019. These things won't depreciate for at least a year so may well put a deposit on a second one in a few months time

My wife reserved ours this morning, given that you can cancel up until the point where you're ready to spec the car up and get a delivery date it's pretty low risk for us. Exciting times!

If their past 150k deposits now, is it pointless me putting a deposit down?

This thing makes a new focus RS look like a ripoff, what an achievement. No doubt will have options that add value rather than just gimmicks.
But does it?

Whilst it is the future, from a drive train POV the electric car is incredibly simple. 3 - Phase motor/generators don't get much simpler and its hooked up to a battery pack with some buck/boost DC-DC converters in the line and an ECU. From a calibration standpoint it must be so much easier to do. No gear box, instant, linear torque. Don't have to calibrate a combustion process to be clean and efficient and produce good torque (I work with guys who's life is ICE calibration and its not a straightforward task at all. Its like trying to spin a thousand plates and keep them all going. No joke, latest Merc Euro 6 trucks have so much gear on them there are of the order 10^13 possible combinations of set points). Dont need fluids, don't need big radiators, coolers, filters, pumps etc. All things that don't need to be bought, tested and certified.

Then theres no need for a fancy gear box. No need to calibrate that or work on shift points and different engine maps for each gear. No need for a chemical factory in the exhaust (on a 2.0 Diesel I think the BOM cost of the aftertreatment is some 2-3 grand!) and again no calibrating around its operating windows.

No doubt some heavy R&D and engineering has gone into the cars but I suspect it can all be done so much quicker than a conventional ICE. Saving time, saving money.

The interior as well, designed really well. No buttons, no dash board. Just some nice looking panels and a large info screen. LHD/RHD conversion will be a piece of cake. Those shapes are nice and simple and easy to mass produce. Don't have to pay a tier 3 supplier for a load of switchgear, don't have to drill or cut holes for them etc etc.

Not knocking it though, extremely happy to see Tesla just snow balling now. Elon is knocking it out of the park and has caught the big boys napping (they're just too slow IMO). If I had the money I'd be with you guys emptying my wallet on the desk of the nearest dealer! Having just bought a second hand Mazda 3 I suspect by the time I replace it, it will be the last ICE powered vehicle I buy.

Pre-orders are officially up to 198,000 now.

That was about 5 hrs ago though, so no doubt they've topped 200K by now.

Why does that seem so good to you?

The rest of the cabin looks very immature (in terms of the development time put into it). With the 3, Tesla show they still don't know how to design a functional and usable interior properly. All the available cabin space gained by not having a ICE or driveline was wasted in the model S and model X. Here it's better (arm rest and cup holders are the only storage I can see) but they're still behind the competition.

Out of interest, if Tesla default in the intervening period, what happens to your deposit?

My email confirmation came through at 04:50 this morning after making a reservation around 09:40 yesterday. No second email yet though with a reservation number which I'm sure I read that other people have received.

I dont think you'd see your money again. What Tesla is doing here is just another form of crowdfunding, the only difference being that they didn't post the project on kickstarter.com

I placed a deposit at about 07:00 yesterday and no email as yet....

No money taken from account either, despite on screen confirmation of deposit acceptance yesterday morning.

Agree with all this. And fear for the future of the car mechanic. Time to start opening up remanufacturing plants for the control gear, rewinding the motors, and the like...

You should build more power stations to drive them all. Our idiot politicians sure aren't.

Anyway here's some pics of it out in the wild:

They were filming it from a camera rig mounted on the back of a Model S.

Mine was almost instant. I paid in Bluewater (shopping centre) and I got the email before I was back at my car.

Nice to see a brace of superchargers, and 3 model S parked up charging.
