As a Roadster owner for 4 yrs I've demo'ed the car to dozens of people many of whom went on to buy EV's of one sort or another! But this was mostly before UK Model S's became available.

I now have a Referral code that allows anyone about to order a Model S to obtain a £1k discount yet I don’t know of any potential Model S buyers, only people who want to buy my Roadster !

If you are interested in using my MS discount code, please PM me to discuss further.

Hi there. Thanks for advertising the offer. I am still sitting on the fence for a Model S. How long is the code valid for? Given the 4 month lead time, I guess that they have hit their sales flat spot in the year for December deliveries and may be stirring up business. Would be interesting to know if the code could be used for 2016 deliveries.

This is an experiment, valid til end of October (for now), so will be applied to early 2016 deliveries. Tesla announce Q2 results tonight, so the timing should help boost sales of the S up until the X's start rolling out.

I was surprised to see the offer carried over to UK (especially so generously with $1k to £1k), as assumed it was to boost sales in US states where manufactures are not allowed to sell directly to the public. Could be seen as a sign of panic, but you'd think that the 4 month lead time shows that orders are still coming in as fast as they can make them.

The logic is based on it costing $2k to sell a car through their sales centres. However may be rather flawed; if I was to buy one, I'd still use the time of the sales centre, then go home and order one using a referral code.

Its valid through to Oct 31st this year. I very much doubt its due to a "flat spot" since they are production constrained rather than demand constrained.

RHD Deliveries are around 3-4 months but this varies with the base spec (rwd/4wd/new 90kwh battery etc) and you can also delay delivery point to when you want it, so if 2016 is key this wont be an issue. Sales units have consistently increased in the past 8 quarters with production having crossed the 100,000 VIN point just this week. The Model X is due to be rolled out within the next 3 months and they have something like 28,000 deposits on it without any PR.

As for why ? there maybe a bit more to this than meets the eye .. Basically, in the US there's a powerful / corrupt dealership lobby that’s trying to prevent Tesla opening showrooms in various states. The lobby has lost this fight state by state, but they are still persisting in a dozen or so.

By letting owners do referrals it totally bypasses the laws that are suppressing sales in those remaining states and its being seen in the US as a clever get around. This is because owners are not bound by the current dealership-protectionist laws, or the ones the lobbyist are trying to push through.

Meanwhile, Tesla can't really restrict the referral scheme to the blocked states (eg Texas, big oil state. Funny that) so its a Worldwide scheme. The $1k / £1k thing is nice for us for once.
