Interesting addendum to this one.

Got my membership of the club back in '08, haven't been back since then for many and various reasons. Finally got around to changing my licence after moving, and its come back from Swansea saying that I have a French licence, and please can they have that back before they issue a new one.

Erm, I don't have a French licence.

I suspect they've set up a skeleton one, but can't find anything on this by Googling. Anyone else had this?

[quote=Nick M]

Saw exactly this back in August - as I was getting near to the peage at Boulogne the cars coming the other way were flashing their headlights (though I suspect they weren't prosecuted for that... wink ) and the northbound traffic slowed to well below the 130kph speed limit, despite it being dry.quote]

They often stand by the toll booth southbound as there is a 90 limit over the bridge and it is difficult to see them against the toll booths.

750 euros? Pah, we spit in the general direction of a 750 euro fine.
You may or may not know what I do but I can tell you that the two guys nicked for 'racing' (they wernt!) on our run this year in July got 7500 euro fines plus 2500 euro costs. They get their cars back next week. Be careful out there especially in France! driving + cop + judge = weeping

So, just to bore you again, and to be a fuddy-duddy, in the local paper today it was stated that there were three deaths in the Sarthe last month, of which two were the result of drink-driving. So, last weekend, the controls continued, resulting in 16 drink-drive convictions and 880 speeding fines from the mobile cameras. It is also stated that since people don't learn they will augment and continue to increase the controls throughout the year. Welcome to the 750 (perhaps 7,500?) euro club!

Figured the licence thing out.

The French DVLA pool all the UK licences together, and pop them in a big envelope to Swansea. In true international cooperation mode, they precisely follow the efficiency of our Welsh brethren, and don't bother marking them as found, retained, or swapped for a French licence, so Swansea just assumed mine had been swapped.

Got a cheque in the post for 78 Euros from the lovely people of Alencon judge

No reason expressed in the letter accompanying the cheque

As a result my fine was only 672 euros - that feels much better hehe

I received a letter in january telling me (in french) that i was banned for driving in france for one year. I paid my 750 euro fine at the police station in Alencion after being escorted back there by the rozzers. We had been so careful not to speed the whole way down, on the way back we had a mad five minutes and got nicked. It cost us 25 euros to rebook the ferry, £20 to get a new uk licence and a huge phone bill for all the emergency calls trying to get the 750 euros together. It was a stty experience mainly due to the language barrier, although the copper at Alencion nick was actually an alright bloke. Definately taught me a lesson, wont be going this year maybe the classic in 2012 i think. Oh and dont ask for proof of speeding, that makes them mad!!

I'm officially a member!

Just to say, there's a Brit called 'Stu Thomas' who is an angel and a saint, without whom I'd still be in the jambonerie no doubt. Saved my ass in a big way when I got stopped.

161 in a 90 is frowned upon by all accounts, was having a great time in the Evora too...

Worse thing is, my licence is currently with the Suffolk plod for endorsement for speeding so the only thing I could give the french plod was my speeding ticket as it's my licence in the UK while my real one is away. It didn't help with my roadside mitigation!!! biggrin

At least they had an answer to their usual question... "Would you drive like this in your own country?" smile

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but , I have a place in Brittany so know the system fairly well

I hope this is a company car !! as the likely outcome is as follows for anything over 240kmh

when you get to court expect another 750 - 1000 e fine , then prepared for a shock

, if the court can prove the car belongs to you , it will be auctioned !!, and sold , you will have to buy it back , its happened before to chaps from the gumball rally porsche sold off for 85,000 euros !! and Ferrari 360 !!

no i'm not joking

This one's old hat now. it was September 2010 he was caught, and the case finally came to court on 18/3/2011. He was fined 1,500 euros, 1,000 car storage fees, and had a ban of two years on driving in France imposed. I went and did the interpreter thing for him to get the car back at the end of March. He was lucky, because the car is a company car so it was released.

no Tony I am afraid your incorrect

the link is not refering to "Ferrari Pete" who you sucessfully assisted and proved his Ferrari was a company car , the link i showed was refering to the Gumball Porsche and Ferrari 360 , both of which were impounded and auctioned off by the French courts .

The speeds were 240km/h

sales of Porsche 80,000euro similar for the Ferrari

an expensive speeding ticket indeed

Do you mean this one:

Based on the fact that my UK licence was cancelled last year rather than being returned to me by the French Authorities (I have a few copies of this one if anyone else wants one)

or this collection?

Fortunately following the Le Mans trip last week the '?' can now be replaced with a 0! (mind you I do have a couple more trips planned through France this summer, so I wont count my chickens just yet)

Yes, assuming that your definition of, "turning a blind eye" is "significantly increasing the presence of traffic police and enforcing the law to those who break it as often as possible."
