My new route to Le Mans

For over 20 years I have used and recommended a route, for those coming ashore at Caen, to Le Mans. Last weekend we tried a different route which was rather influenced by the existence of an English pub just off the route. So here goes if anyone is interested:-

From Caen to Falaise, the right to Putanges Pont Ecrepin

On to Rânes, where there is a crossroads. Turn right here to La Ferté Macé

South to Ménoudin here, then left towards Neuilly le Vendin and then the oasis of Couptrain. Here there is an English pub called the Famous Knight which doesn't do food but serves London Pride and London Porter, plus local cider. Now check out the opening times if this is the reason for using my new route (but I am sure not!).

Try ringing her to check the opening times because she is English!

On to Pré en Pail and turn right for Gevres, St Paul le Gaultier then on to Sillé le Guillaume and then to St. Saturnin. Many of you have told me how much you liked the old route, but I can assure you that the new part on from Pré en Pail is a damn site twistier than the old one and a good test of man and machine. Blind crests with high banks, pure countryside and hardly a car to be seen, nor of course the BiB.

Did a very similar route couple of years again in a Honda S2000 cracking route did not know about the pub but may make a detour to have a pint this year

O/T - is there somewhere near to the circuit to buy firewood? The equivalent of the bags you get at service stations here.

Er - in June? Not much call for it I'm afraid. But as a simple tip most of the forest between Indianapolis and Mulsanne has been burned to the ground and there is a stack of bits and pieces left where they cut the trees and left branches or parts of. Over 200 acres gone and loads to pick up.

Yes,I have seen people moaning about "Panache" before. Just understand that the word means "shandy"!

You can imagine my disappointment the first time I bought it, not knowing!

Koenigsbier is actually (in my own opinion!!) pretty nice when served ice cold, can't moan at £3.50 or so for 20 stubbies.

Usually bring 7-8 crates back with us too, which lasts until we next get back over there

Can't think of anything worse than going to an English pub in France!

Surely part of being in France is the different culture, food etc?

I really don't get the attraction of an English pub anywhere other than England.

It certainly does do food.........I can see peanuts behind the bar!

And Cheese Flavoured Moments, and even possible Pork Scratchings though only a side view so hard to be sure.

Hot food too! Pie cabinet or whatever behind the bar and it looks like a teapot on the shelves under it.

And jugs for your beer and even a yard glass sneaking in at the top of shot.

This place is better than any of my locals!
