PistonHeads at Le Mans Classic

LM24 too brash? Join us at the Classic instead

Only at the Classic....
Only at the Classic....
PistonHeads Camping will make an appearance at the Le Mans Classic for the first time in 2012 thanks to tenting trend-setters 1st-Tickets. The PistonHeads campsite will be open from Thursday 5th July to Monday 9th July.

The Classic is a reminder of Le Mans past with a more genteel atmosphere, no funfairs, no burger vans, no stickered-up cars and no Dutch techno. If you want to see great racing, great classics on the surrounding roads and fancy being surrounded by car enthusiasts instead of stag parties, this is the event for you.

Taking place every two years, Le Mans Classic takes place on 6th – 8th July 2012 and covers Le Mans race cars from 1923 right through to 1979. These are split into six grids and between them provide 24 hours of classic racing.

The Classic continues to grow in popularity and is an excellent reason to come to Le Mans in July. It is expected to attract over 100,000 visitors to the circuit with 400 competing cars and 1000 drivers on the track. There will again be a huge club presence of over 8000 club cars around the Buggatti Circuit.

Unlike the LM24, the Classic comprises of a variety of races over the 24-hour period, not just one race. This programme offers races covering less than two hours throughout the weekend, with races covering the following periods:

  • 1923-1939
  • 1949-1956
  • 1957-1961
  • 1962-1965
  • 1966-1971
  • 1972-1979

As per usual, we'll be camping on Bleu Nord, a short walk from the circuit, paddock and pit lane. At Classic this area is not as busy as the 24 and offers a nice, secure base for PHers to enjoy.

The campsite size may be increased, but initially we can offer 4000M2 and at least 70 spaces are available for PHers. If you've been with us before you'll know that PH camping offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with private facilities, secure perimiter fencing 24-hour manned security patrols and gate staff.

In addition we offer:

  • A private PH marquee with cash bar, fresh coffee, daily bread deliveries and phone/ camera charging points.
  • Marked out, reserved pitches - no need to rush, your space will be saved
  • Private toilets and showers
  • Large pitches and driver-only (smaller) pitches are also available

A range of ferry crossings are available to tailor your package. Pricing is to be finalised, but we are able to give a close estimation, including race admission, below:

Although we are still in the process of finalising our prices, the table below gives an indication of the likely price per person - and race entry tickets are included
(there may be a slight increase/decrease, depending on supplier costs, land rental and Euro Exchange rate)
Standard Pitch(3.5m x 10m) Two per Car Three per Car Four per Car
    Eurotunnel £299 pp £225 pp £186 pp
Ferry (Dover - Calais) £289 pp £219 pp £181 pp

    Eurotunnel £450 pp £525 pp
Ferry (Dover - Calais) £430 pp £505 pp

In addition to the camping and racing, we can also offer some parade laps on the Le Mans circuit.

For more information or to reserve your spot, please see here

Club Enclosure and track laps

As one of the largest classic car events, the Le Mans Classic attracts car clubs from throughout Europe, and there will be over 8000 cars on display in the club enclosures on the Bugatti Circuit.

On Saturday morning we can offer the opportunity to drive the full Le Mans circuit as part of the "Club Parade Laps".

PH will, for the first time, have a club enclosure at the event for those that are taking parade laps or just wanting to display their car.  Initially there is space for up to 30 cars (priority will be given to those with parade laps).

For such an event there are some basic eligibility rules for parking and track laps (as set by the organisers)

  • Cars to be in perfect condition
  • Cars must be built before 1966, but a few more recently built models of certain brands can be accepted from certain manufacturers (see attached thread)

For more information on the camping, or any other aspect of the PistonHeads Le Mans Classic (including booking) please click on this linkor call 01767 680119

Is it possible to get a discount if I make my own way to the campsite? I'm in Norway so it would be a bit of a long trip to get to the UK and then come back again!

Good point. I have a group of people keen to experience their first Le Mans and not all will need a channel crossing..

Yes, we can offer non crossing packages for European PHers that don't need to cross the Channel. If you register online via the link in the article, we can then send you a bespoke package price.

Interesting list.

MX-5 because Mazda competed at LeMans, but no RX8, despite the LeMans winning car having a rotary engine.

No XJS? not even the LeMans winning engined V12 version?

No Rover despite rover competing in the turbine car, not even the P6?

Only Triumph coupe I can think of is the TR7.

The NSU R080 seems an anomaly, being a fairly ordinary saloon. Unless they have some LeMan pedigree I am not aware of? No DS seems a shame, too.

Open to abuse as well, how many Mercedes SL owners know if there's is an R107 or not? What about the Jaguar XJ? I didn't know the difference until I bought one, and even then isn't the current big Jaguar saloon an XJ? I also suspect they meant Porsche 911 model to 997, but according ot this list 924/Boxster/Cayenne/Panemera?

Anyone going in an AM Cygnet?

Simply put, the LMC is the better half of the LM24. If you haven't done Le Mans, do it. If you've done Le Mans but you're feeling a bit old for it and don't fancy watching a Danish techno enthusiast wall himself into his campsite with beer bottles whilst "sharing" his taste in nose-bleed techno, do it. If you've been to the Goodwood Revival or would like to, do it. If you're bored of muted diesels winning, do it.

If of course the prospect of watching GT40s battle it out through the night (the racing at Le Mans is astonishingly hard and real) doesn't have you dribbling with excitement at what's to come once we get through the winter, Le Mans Classic probably isn't for you.

In short, do it. With PistonHeads, obviously. smile

Oops, so it is.

I know the NSU was a wankel, is that enough to 'qualify' it? Pretty tenuous, I mean, a V12 engined car once won LeMans, does that mean all V12 engined cars are allowed? Same could apply to diesels...

Just seems a strange list to me.

Yes, the eilgible cars list for the track laps and club enclosure will generate debate about which cars and models should or should not be included. The list is defined by the event organisers, who have determined which post 1966 cars are eligible and, unfortunately, there will always be winners and losers.

However, to camp on the PistonHeads/1st Tickets you can bring whatever car you want! smile

Yep, big shame, I'd have loved to take mine around, it loves a track:

Out of interest the list mentions Lotus (all models) but would it incorporate a Cortina Lotus which all intents and purposes is a Ford:
