If your turning left at a junction and the vehicle to your right is turing right, you can't see if there is anything coming.

Surprised nobody mentioned a Panamera Sport Truismo. Huge car, super comfy with air suspension, get the 4S / Turbo if you need 4 wheel drive and sub 4s 0-60, loads of room for kids paraphernalia. It's better than a RR cos it does all the stuff a RR does, but then its a Porsche, and you can actually drive it like it needs to be driven when there's no family members/stuff in it. And....whilst it may not have Lexus reliability, it's deffo way better than JLR / RR.
See my comments on the RRS. I also have a Panamera Turbo S.

I actually think the RRS is the better car for a 1000km a day journey, It also has more useable space. I can chuck a bale of hay in the back of the RRS, not so in the Panny.

For other uses the Panny is obviously better than the RRS.

Not the same height though. I never said a transit van was long.
Range Rovers are not as tall as transit vans, you are posting rubbish.

I looked at these-fine if you have 2 kids but the middle 3rd seat is really only for occasional use if you want to seat 5.

Ha ha. Yes, I only had one gearbox crap out on me in my early 4S!

Seriously, I loved that car, but it didn’t have the load space of a FFRR, that is true.

I don't get the love for tall cars for family use, mainly for access reasons.

Both my 18 month old and 4 year old can climb into our normal car so I don't have to lift them. We had the grandparents round with their kodiaq the other day and the kids struggled to get into the back without lifting them in which is just a nuisance. This would be less an issue once they are older admittedly.

I also regularly have bikes on the roof. Again far easier to get multiple bikes on and off a lower car, rather than climbing on sills.

That said my grandparents love their Skoda. They aren't as mobile (or lythe) as they once where and find getting in and out easier. But for adults with normal mobility, I don't see the merit.

As for the range rover question, I can see the appeal from a luxury perspective. Makes you question what is the most luxurious estate car these days though? A top spec V90 T8 would be tempting.

I can see why people like them, easy to get babies and small children in due to being at a good height, when they are able to walk they can climb in (kids are very good at climbing), easy for any adult to get in and out of, easy to load stuff into the boot.

Saying all that I don't own one, but when I see one on the road it has zero impact on my day and that really was my point.

It’s PH nowadays.

Sensible debate - NO. Logic - NO. Experience - NO. Opinion (without triple referenced research papers) - NO.

Idiot comments and arguments - YES!

There are a few sensible threads but not many.

I hear you. They certainly are popular and there is no reason to get bent out of shape about their existence.

That said I do feel the family practicality aspect of them is overplayed.

As for the original question - I think as luxurious family cars go the range rover is hard to beat. Best family car outright? I'm not so sure.

They’re certainly the best family cars my family has had. They get even better when your offspring get long and you inherit mothers-in-law.

We do decent distances in ours though which does influence the choice.
