Saab 9-5 Aero. That was our family car when I was a kid. Did everything well.

Oh and for the record I've had two different land rovers - a lightweight powered by a ford V6 and a 90 with a 3.9 V6 from a range rover.

I do like the look of the l322 model when it's in queen Liz spec with small wheels, no tints and dark green or blue rather than full on drug dealer spec.

I'm not against the brand as a whole, just basically anything in the last 20 odd years or so since things went down quality wise.

Ah, he reveals his prejudice - he’s one of those odd Land Rover, supposed, die-hards.

Having owned a couple of Series Land Rovers, I’m not sure they provide a benchmark on quality, nor indeed any relevance to the subject in hand.

Ford Galaxy is the GOAT when it comes to family cars.

Chuck the pram in the boot whole without Jenga

Take their pals with you

Take the grandparents with you

Picnic tables on seats

Get changed inside before swimming lesson

Take anything you want with you on holiday, bikes boards, chuck em in the back

Handles like a hatchback

Get an ex Addison Lee car and they come blacked out so nobody can see it's you

I hear you. They certainly are popular and there is no reason to get bent out of shape about their existence.

That said I do feel the family practicality aspect of them is overplayed.

As for the original question - I think as luxurious family cars go the range rover is hard to beat. Best family car outright? I'm not so sure.
I think it's perfectly valid to question the size of them as a family car. Is the increase in danger and inconvenience to all around and the environmental impact worth sitting a few inches higher? I've owned Land Cruisers and Discoverys in the past but I've little interest in a Range Rover since they became an image car.

GOAT obviously depends on what you need from a family car and the Galaxy is extremely practical, but I would never want to own one.

Just can’t beat the feeling and ride of a FFRR. Bills are best budgeted for £2k a year on most of them but it strikes such a lovely balance of opulence and ability. The TDV8 is a wonderful engine too. Prob avoid the underpowered TDV6.

Well, Harry and Clarkson love theirs. I would like one but I suspect by the time I get around to it there will be very few good ones left.

I went for a Cayenne GTS for this.

I couldn’t get past the reliability (perceived or otherwise) of the RR - and I’ve had Alfas!

Ironically, it’s had some random issues like rear wiper motor and rear door lock actuator both failed.

Actually, I don't care.
It’s PH nowadays.

Sensible debate - NO. Logic - NO. Experience - NO. Opinion (without triple referenced research papers) - NO.

Idiot comments and arguments - YES!

There are a few sensible threads but not many.
These posts above just illustrate that you two can't bear that people might disagree and/or think you're wrong. A few posters are politely disagreeing with the subject of the thread, there isn't any 'bile' or other nonsense being quoted above.

Almost by definition, the FFRR isn't the best family car because the OP has another car as a local runabout. As a car for trips, when you have a 5-car garage, yes they're great, but as an everyday family car? That is by no means a clear-cut answer. But that's no reason for people to have a little strop.

Thanks for your stroppy opinion.

A lot of posts on this thread have been unreasonably biased and argumentative which distracts from a discussion related to the original post. I welcome debate and alternative views but not idiotic opinion. The OP has been a bit stroppy as a result of some of the posts but please point out where I’ve stropped on this thread in response to a particular view.

Naturally there is no right answer as to what is the best family car as it depends on individual needs (seats, space, access to parking) and tastes (speed, luxury). It also (as noted above) depends on whether it is the only car or 1 of 2 or more. For ultimate practicality there are better options than the FFRR (e.g. the Galaxy) so it comes down to a luxury or feelgood factor in the FFRR which is why so many like them. As an only car a FFRR may be a bit big and cumbersome for all journeys so a fast AWD estate like an S6 or E53 may be a good compromise. Also if you go for luxurious SUVs the FFRR is not the only show in town these days by any stretch of the imagination.

Err, your last two posts are stroppy laugh

You come across as overly sensitive to the idea that a FFRR is not the best car (or even a good one) for everyone.

Overly sensitive laugh

I quoted useful facts for the OP to make his own decision based on years of actual ownership of FFRR’s, unlike many of the other posters who have never even owned one. Try to stop the personal comments, read back, and you might learn a bit about FFRR’s smile

He responded to it, and then I responded to him, and they've all gone. You're clearly not banned, and neither am I, so obviously our posts weren't THAT bad hehe
