M4 - Cat D - Too risky?

ANY cat C or D car should, (as a VERY general rule), be worth around half of the vehicles trade value. That is, if this BMW is worth, say, £50000 trade, then it's cat C or D value is £25000.
I'll buy all you can find at 50% discount.
I used to buy lots of Hot hatches that were CAT D when I was younger as they were a bit cheaper - around 10-20%
However I wouldn't consider buying a car over £10k that was Cat D - not worth the hassle / risk
Equally, at 10-20% below trade price, I wouldn't bother, especially with a sub £10K car. What's the point?
On a £100K car, paying 30% less on a cat D car is worth considering. When you come to sell, you will get people begging to buy it off you as they want a "bargain" too. The problem is, there are some dodgy repaired cars out there. Shiny paint can hide a lot. Especially if the right off was due to something like flood damage where an insurance repair would involve taking everything apart or replacing expensive bits whereas an unofficial repair could just be - get everything working good enough to flog it.
The honesty of the trader wouldn't bother me - they are all the same, just some better at hiding it than others.
The price does bother me. It is £10K too expensive and probably more so if it was flood damaged.
As most are saying here - leave well alone.

It's all down to when the damage that wrote the car off happened.
If you have a £1000 20 year old BMW 320i and someone mashes the rear bumper, by the time it's been replaced and painted and fitted it'll be costing a good % of what it's worth so will get written off. Obviously a bumper swap is nothing major and less than most cars on the road could have had done to them.
On the flip side, the £45000 M3 at 2 years old will need to have had a decent amount of damage to have written it off.
Thats how I understand it anyway.
Bang on, all to do with being economical to repair. To give a real life example, the 2 times I go run into in my Saab, the bills were around £1600 and £1800 for first and second time. Car value as around £3500 frist time and maybe £3000 second time. They didn't Cat D me either time just accepted the repair and put it through. If you have a £1000 20 year old BMW 320i and someone mashes the rear bumper, by the time it's been replaced and painted and fitted it'll be costing a good % of what it's worth so will get written off. For that M4 to be classed as Cat D it's going to have to have racked up probably about £28k+ of damage. That's a pretty serious accident to write off a £50k car, that's not just as simple as a few new panels and a respray.
On a car sub £6k, sure, Cat D can be easy to get. Get rear ended and have to change rear bumper, 2 quarter panels and maybe some exhausty bits and the bill is creeping up close to write off territory. On a £50k car though, run. Run as fast as you can and never look back. That things been sent rolling into a field, been flood damaged, fire damaged or something.

Birmingham, the guantanamo bay of car sales, will be an ex rental/wedding car along with the other dozen or so top end cars they have that are on the insurance register
Yup.
Thrashed by innits at the nuptials of various innits, destroyed in a crash by an innit, and sold by an innit.
Wouldn't give £25k for it.
What a joke.

There was one next to me in the station car park that started up and drove off. A few things I noticed.- It seems to have a 'loud' setting to annoy everyone when you start it up before settling down.
- It doesn't sound like a straight 6 (not sure what it sounds like) but the noise is odd.
- When it drove past it sounded like only the right hand side exhausts were being used - maybe the left side are only used when its in Sport mode or whatever?

Indeed it is. I refer to advice previously given on this particular dealer.

I'd consider it at £25K but why bother? An "innit" will have it for £37K which is more than I'd pay.
Some comments on this thread with the racial/social profiling are quite shocking..
Anyway, back onto car's. There are quite a few M4's for sale which do not have an insurance marker against them, and I can imagine there are even car's for sale which have been damaged then repaired, and then left unrecorded.
Personally, I wouldn't buy a performance car that has a Cat C/D marker against it, no matter how cheap it is if it has been repaired already.
I would consider buying a damaged car and have it repaired by someone I choose as then you would know the damage done to it and how it has been repaired etc

Quite. Buying a £1500 Mondeo in good condition, but Cat D because someone drove into it and cracked the bumper? Go for it. £40,000 BMW with a Cat D due to no doubt extensive structural damage? 90% of the time you can judge a book by the cover, you can also get a pretty good idea if it's placed in the bin (Handsworth, Winson Green, Balsall Heath, Alum Rock etc) then it isn't going to be mint. That goes for the people and the cars.
I'm relatively local and several of my friends are car dealers. If innits call on cars "It's sold" if you call about a car and find it's in a dubious area you don't bother going to look at it - experience tells them it's a waste of time.

Ta for the replies. Just to update this thread a tad. I decided to go ahead and purchased the car yesterday (...only kidding)
Still haven't heard back from them after leaving my contact details. Can only imagine that my questions about what damage/repairs were done have scared them off even replying.
