Italo, Polycarbonate is indeed very light but not exactly strong. I am in the process of prototyping some gull wing doors with a large window area made from polycarbonate. I have found that a sturdy steel frame is required to make it anywhere near strong enough for a door. Also your small hinge area will need a beefy hinge and lots of body stiffening or it will wobble and bind in the door shuts. I am abandoning my scissor doors in favour of gull wing which will hopefully fit the closure points more accurately.

Love the designs btw

Mike,
Thanks........and I totally agree with you on the steel frame, in fact it would be needed for such a big aperture, but I've come to the conclusion just like you, that gullwing doors would suit bettere this design.

Cheers
Italo

I finally found them......smile, these are my very rough skethces of a similar concept, but using a mid-engine kitcar chassis.

I like the simplicity of a polycarbonate door..... but I guess i'm the only one here....biggrin

Thanks for those I remember them now.

I quite like the idea of polycarbonate doors but you's probably have some serious issues with scratches and getting them to seal in a consistant manner unless they had metal frames?

I think you could use a light fiberglass mould of the door frame, and then glue the polycarbonate windows.......

Tha was my thinking at the time.....and now you do have better scratch resistan polycarbonate.

What a strange looking vehicle...!
The front is very attractive, the side and rear are a bit, odd. It seems to be a bit too "concept"-ish for my tastes, I think it'd look better with more conventional bodywork over it to match the nice front end. Not sure what the whole malarkey is with the wheel covers too.

It's supposed to be an electric sportscar for 2012 to compete against the TESLA......

So I read on the site - and an excellent idea it is too, however I can predict now the Tesla will be more successful because it looks like an ordinary car - this will appeal to far too small a market due to the ... "odd" bodywork treatment! If the style from the front end was carried along the whole length of the car it would look spectacular, as is it looks a bit like a tablecloth on top of an R/C car chassis.

True.........but in 4yrs. time, design will have moved forward, and a similar shape will be accepted as the norm, just as the First Smart when it came out more than 10yrs. ago.

By then the Tesla will look really old, and this shape with a few design tweaks will be up to date.

With electric cars having a different engine and battery technical layot, design will change drammatically.

I still think that it will take a little longer to change perceptions, but believe me, a new breed of sportscars is coming, and they will look very modern and different.

What a few car manufacturers are doing with their concept cars, and the use of lexan and other plastics, for a preview of future design trends in car manufacturing.......

In 2004 Bertone showed the VILLA, a concept car based on a Cadillac platform, where a different approach to space was the predominant feature.

Nice little coupe, and the polycarb door idea is really nice, and being done quite a bit on concepts now. I drive a Smart ForTwo, which has a polycarbonate clear roof, and its definitely strong enough - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=v5UujR4ngB4

I gotta say I quite like the Hyundai.

This could probably be translated into a kit, i wont say easily for fear of being shot down in flames but surely to god it could be adated to fit over an existing chassis.

Alternatively it could be a whole new thing using grp chassis body tub like the GTM or the Murtaya

love your design as always italo
