New Morgan 3 wheeler
Discussion
Hello all,
As most of you know Morgan is re-introducing the "classic" three wheeler to it's range of vehicles.
Anyway, a new Morgan dealer popped up near to where i live about 6 weeks ago. Last week they got the new 3 wheeler in and i went over in the Lomax to have a look at it.
First thing i noticed was the size of it. It is a lot bigger than my Lomax. I have seen many originals and thought the new one was just a re-creation from the old one... Far from it. The track on my Lomax is circa 4 ft, the new Morgan must be nearly 5ft 6".
Second thing you notice is the size of the motor. It is HUGE. A 2 litre S&S V-twin producing 130bhp in a car weighing 450kgs the stroke doesn't look that big so the bore must be huge, the cylinder heads are very very big. Aparently it can do 0-60 in about 4 seconds and it can deffinately do 120mph, but they dont want to try it's TOP speed. The dealer said when he drove one he daren't go over 80 as he felt that was fast enough for him.
Unfortunately the one they had was not registered yet, so we weren't allowed to have a go in it, however the dealer did let us sit in in and he fired it up and revved it a bit too. Because the compression is so much, the starter motor sounds lazy at first, but it soon fires into a very deep rumble and when revved is VERY loud and does actually sound like an aero engine.
The engine is linked to a short shift mazda MX5 gearbox and is shaft drive to the back where there is a final drive and then a belt to the rear wheel and a big fat tire. The shift feels incredibly short, can't be much more than 2 or 3 inches.
As far as the interior goes, VERY nice indeed. There isn't quite as much room as the Lomax, but i can fit in relatively well. The standard steering wheel is a bit ugly for the price, but you can upgrade to a nicer one and it is detatchable too for getting in and out. General build quality is good too and they really are very well put together.
Apparently they have already had over 800 orders and they reckon they can build about 10 a week so there is already a nigh on 2 year waiting list.
The dealer said he is going to get it registered in January and we have been invited back for a test drive.
At £36k the price does seem a bit steep. the one they had in was specced up with full leather trim, aero screens and a brightwork kit as well as other goodies so was £39k.
In all it really does feel like the REAL DEAL. It is VERY special. I think if i had priced it after looking at it, i would say £25k seems about right considering a factory build triking comes in at circa £14k, but so is he way of life. If they have 800 orders already at £36k they must be doing something right!!

I've had my eye on the Morgan as a possible future purchase, so this is disappointing.
Either the guy sat in the car in that picture (you, slomax?) is a pixie, or that thing has a bonnet and 'radiator' shell of almost Bentleyesque propostions!
Obviously it's been scaled up to accommodate fat-arsed americans?

There's not a chance you'd get a fat-arsed person in that car - it's still pretty small all things considered.

It is wider than I expected, but it's still narrower than most things on the road.

The seat is actually pretty narrow. I fitted, but it was snug (34" waist). Much wider hips and you'd be in trouble. knees were jammed right up under the steering wheel too and the pedal box was in its furthest position although you can get a slimmer seat as an option apparently for a bit more leg room...
I will say that the photo does somewhat accentuate the bonnet and cowling, but it's not exactly small, no...

ETA: i would guess that the wheels are a minimum of 17", maybe a bit bigger, so it looks all in proportion.

Thank you for your feedback on your Morgan dealership visit...

I found the brand new Morgan Blueprint and you can check for dimensions, the front wheels are 18in.

people nowadays are getting "bigger"....and the result is that the manufactures react to those facts.
compare an original lotus7 or lotus6 with the typical seven designs today....cars are getting bigger, wider...not only for performance reasons...
a typical waist-size for a 60ies seven driver was around 30"
