poss selling of car
Discussion
hi, thinking of selling my track car (retoga r1, very quick) its in very good condition. the only thing wrong is the gearbox (2nd gear) is noisy! from a selling point of view, what would or should i expect to knock of the selling price. the car comes with spares. (i do have a spare gearbox) thanks
It'll cost a fair bit more than that to fix second gear in an R1.
It's a lot of work to get to the gearbox. You have to split the crankcase. Which means that the cams come off, then the head. From the other end, it's sump off, water pump out, oil pump out.
The generator needs to be removed, as does the clutch cover.
It's just spannering, nothing very complicated, but there are a scary number of parts to remove. You'll need to be happy retiming the cams (you really do have to take them off the head), retorquing the head bolts and happy exposing the bottom end bearings.
It's about £350 for parts (new gaskets, yamabond and O-rings) just to put the engine back together. If you know what you're doing it'll take ~3 or 4 hours to disassemble (it took me twice that). I assume assembly will be 4 to 5 hours, but I haven't got that far yet.
Then of course you need to add the cost of fixing whatever is wrong with the gear box.
Finally you need to add a couple of hours to remove the engine from the car and a couple to put it back.
If you have gearbox trouble in an R1, it really is worth considering replacing the engine.
ETA. My local Yamaha bike garage wanted £600 + parts to do the job, assuming I delivered the engine to them already removed from the car. And that is why the engine is currently spread across my garage floor.
