New ultra-light sports car arrives

Very affordable high speed fun on tap

There's a new ultra-light car on the block -- and it's very affordable.

Following a good reception at Autosport last week, GTM has decided to build a road legal version of the 40TR. Another motivation is because it's the company's 40th anniversary.

Powered by a two-litre 220bhp Type R Honda engine that can also run on bio-fuel, the 650kg car's said to achieve 0-60mph in under four seconds and to hit a top speed of over 150mph. It features an exposed aluminium superstructure and has - er - challenging looks.

The two-seater will be on the tarmac by the summer, while customers for the original track and race models have only to wait until mid-March.

GTM Cars, which employs eight people at its Coventry based headquarters has invested £250,000 to bring the project to fruition and has designed the 40TR in conjunction with another local company, Stadco Engineering.

The 40TR which is expected to cost a very reasonable £14,000 to £16,000, and is the fourth model in GTM’s stable, sitting alongside the Ballista, launched at Autosport 2006. That model also starts production in June this year.

The Libra sports car was launched in 1998 and the Spyder convertible was launched in 2002.

GTM boss Lloyd Taylor said: “We are delighted with the enthusiastic response to a road legal version of the GTM 40TR from visitors to Autosport. Along with the track and race version it will offer enthusiasts something different with its ultra light construction. It is extremely fast and superb value for money -- and it’s made in the Midlands.”

It may not be pretty but when you're driving it, why would you care? Watch out Ariel Atom...

Eh, thats not it is it? I thought that was one of those pre-production models they do with the body left off to show the chassis / construction underneath.... Cant shoot themselves in the foot and release it like that!

Add a bit more body and maybe some form of roof, so what about an extra 50kg, still be quick....

This looks very odd, and dangerous! The seats appear to sit relatively low with the steering wheel head height and the 'bonnet' even higher!? And the front wheel's very close to the frame work...

As a professional Product Designer - Those visuals are terrible and do not help this car at all. The concept is good, but very poor execusion. I dont beleive the price either as I am just having a Honda convserion to my Lotus, costing around £10000.

Without a doubt the worst looking car i've ever seen, and that includes the Pontiac Aztec and Ssangyong Rodius.

An abortion of a car design.

It may not be the most attrative car ever produced, but ther again the Aerial Atom and the Lotus 340R also were not blessed in the looks dept either. It will be a good high days and holidays fun car....it has a bloody good engine which will reflect in the powere to weight figures....best of luck to them
