I have a 78 Taimar.
Please is anyone aware of the glass roof TVR used for their M series cars? Is it the same unit as used on Vixens and the other older ones? What is the donor vehicle?
Does anyone have one on their car? Any pros/cons to fitting and using one?
Need new sunroof but not really wanting to replace vinyl slideback with a new vinyl slideback.
Cheers!driving

Hi,

I have got one on my 1980 Taimar, the good bit with it is that you can have it open at an angle or undo three clips and take it out completly to store in the back.
As these cars do get rather hot inside it tends to be in the back a lot, also I don't know about the material ones but my car stays totally dry inside even in the hardest rain.

One issue when these after market glass roofs that are fitted to the M/Taimar is that they are flat, and because fibreglass can deform it does, this leaves ripple like effects along the roof line. so..the smaller the better. The option of fitting one to a car that has had a cloth roof has been looked into by several of my customers, but there is not one large enough to fill the old hole without making the profile of the car look odd, what with them having to redo a roof lining, which also leads to reworking the roof line to suit it all too expensive. With many of the cloth roof fronts and rear metal turning to rust and parts for them being made in unobtainium! I'm sure that it will be mooted more and more. Adrian@

Hi Adrian

Maybe the cloth roof takes up more room but I have got to say that from the outside that my glass looks flat, but being one that was factory fitted, when you take it out you can see the curve in the glass. Maybe you remember the car from when Phil Bell (Editor of Classic Car) used to own it.

Hi Grant
Yes I do remember it...there were a few cars factory fitted with these fully removable glass units, which were quite cute, it was at a time when you could get them fitted on every street corner, I have not seen any adverts for fitting these (not that I've looked) as I said, when they are smaller they do not tend to look out of place, I have seen ones that are so big that they make the car look ugly. It's not something I could live with (a flat roof look to the car) Adrian@

Thanks very much Grant, Matt and Adrian. I can understand the flat roof problem, the fabric roofs do flow better. For practicality I think glass is still the way I want to go as my fabric roof is unusable and I have a piece of plastic shoehorned into the original aperture channels and it drips badly on the passenger seat, just need to find a proper glass one now.

If you need to make the current hole smaller I have a fibreglass panel that will fit into the hole that can be then recut to fit a smaller roof panel (if you get my drift).
